C Stiles Book E Vol. 4 Page 104 page #3 State of New York Cayuga County On this fourteenth day of September 1832 personally appeared before me, Gershom Norse one of the judges of the Court of Commons pleas for the County of Cayuga Lewis Hewitt a resident of the town of Sempronius County of Cayuga and State of New York aged Seventy four years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make this following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That he entered the Service of the United States under the following named affairs and served as herein states That about the first of April 1775 he enlisted in the town of Preston County of New London State of Connecticut for seven or eight months under Lieut. Col. John Tyler who commanded the company from Preston he marched to Roxbury Massachusetts That the regiment was commanded by Col. Samuel Parsons that he was stationed at Roxbury during his tour of service that in the latter part of the month of November or first of December he was discharged That in the month of January 1776 he enlisted for three months under Captain James Gordon 1st Lieut. Henir Dason 2nd Lieut David Cady and commanded by Col. John Douglas That he marched to Cambridge Massachusetts that he was garrisoned in the Colleges at Cambridge a part of the time and a part of the time at Roxbury that he served three months that Generals Washington Putman Green and Thenurs were at Boston at the time that he was at Dorchester heights when the British evacuated Boston that he marched into Boston and to Roxbury where he was discharged. That in the spring of 1776 he enlisted in the town of Preston County of New London State of Connecticut for six months under Captain William Belcher Col. Gay Lieut. Col. Lotterman and Major Watterman Clift commanded the regiment that marched from Preston to the City of New York that he was stationed in the page #4 City of New York until the British entered the City that the regiment to which he belonged was mostly surrounded by British troops that the Col. was taken prisoner after which retreat Lieut. Col. Lotterman commanded the regiment that he retreated to Harlem Heights near Kings bridges and near Fort Washington there continued the retreat to White Plains from there to North Castle near the highlands. That in the month of November 1777 he was drafted for three months in the town of Preston in the County of New London State of Connecticut that he was marched and stationed at Fort Griswald under Capt. Richard Starkweather that he did his duty in Fort Griswald and at New London that he was discharged when his time if service had expired. That in the month of August 1778 he entered into service on board the Brig Nancy Captain Wm Leeds for a cruise that he was taken prisoner off the West port of Long Island a short time after sailing from New London by the British frigate Greyhound and carried into the City of New York That the Greyhound was commanded by Capt Durson that he was kept on board the prison ship Good Hope nearly three months that there were confirmed at the same time a large number of prisoners it was said about seven hundred prisoners that Captains Griffin and Perkins were prisoners at the same time that he was discharged and sent to Boston and was landed from the visit. That in the month of July or August he enlisted in the town of Plainfield County of Windham and State of Connecticut to go a cruise under Capt. N Fosdick of the Sloop Randolph of eighteen guns. That he sailed from New London that the sloop Randolph took the British vessel Nilurna and a schooner that was privi to her and he was sent to New London under prison Master Hibbard that he was out about two months page #5 that in the month of March or April 1781 he recieved an ensigns commission in the State Troops of the State of Connecticut in the town of Plainfield County of Windham and State of Connecticut and entered the service for one year under Captain James Dana Lieut. Cogwin in Col. Edwin Shipman's regiment Col. Humphreys commanded a regiment in the same Brigade The Brigade commanded by General Waterbury that he marched to Stamford from there to White Plains in the State of New York from there to Frogs Point where he was in an engagement with the British and Tories called Dunasee' or Dundasies Corps that this Corps was driven from the plain from Frogs Point he marched to near White Plains was at Frogs Point when the French and American Armies marched to the Southward that the Brigade to which he was attached wasa flying comp and marched from plain to plain to horse mills then to Grenwich then to Kings Street and finally marched to Stamford in the State of Connecticut where he went into Winter quarters that he continued at Stamford until the expiration of his time of service that his Captain and Lieutenant were both absent and he as ensign Commandant discharged his Company That he lost his commision in the town of Windham and County of Windham and State of Connecticut And that he has no documentary evidence of service that he cannot prove any personal testimony except the testimony of -------- on Whipple ------ ------- He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present one and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any State Sworn and Subscribed Lewis Hewitt The day and year aforesaid before Mr Gershom Norse a Judge of lay Com pleas page #6 Declaration - In order to obtain the benefit of the third section of the Act of Congress of the 4th July 1836 and the joint Resolution of July 7 1838 State of New York Cayuga County On this 29th day of August 1848 personally appeared before the undersigned Wing Tabor ca Judge of the County Court in aforesaid County, Charlotte Hewitt a resident of Moravia County and State aforesaid aged 78 years, who being first duly sworn according to Law doth in her Oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by the Act of Congress passed July 4th 1836 and the joint resolution of July 7 1838, That she is the widow of Lewis Hewitt who was a pensioner of the United States in the Revolutionary Army, She further declares that she was married to the said Lewis Hewitt on or about the month of October Seventeen hundred and eighty one, That her husband the aforesaid Lewis Hewitt died in the 15th day of March 1837, and that she has remained a widow ever since that period, as will more fully appear by reference to the proof hereinto annexed, sworn and subscribed in the day and year aforewritten Charlotte Hewitt Before me Wing Tabor Judge Cayuga County Court And I the Said Judge do hereby Certify that I am well aquainted with the above named Charlotte Hewitt and that she cannot from bodily infirmity attend Court, and I further Certify that she is a respectable person and that her testimony is intitled to credit and belief - and that she still remains the widow of said Lewis Hewitt deceased, Wing Tabor Judge Cayuga County Court
