The submittor has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. ************************************************************************ Found this in our newspaper "The Auburn Daily Advertiser," pg. one (1) Saturday October 8, 1910 Civil War Heroine Dead, Chicago, Oct. 8 - Mrs. Mary Hunt Loomis, Chicago society woman and heroine of the Civil war died yesterday leaving a fortune of $1,250,000.00 to the Loomis Institute, an educational institution at Windsor, Conn., founded 18 years ago by Mrs. Loomis's husband and his brothers and a sister. Mrs. Loomis who was the widow of Colonel John Mason Loomis, was born at Sherburne, N.Y., 81 years ago. She was married to Colonel Loomis in New York 60 years ago coming to Chicago immediately after the wedding. At the outbreak of the Civil War she accompanied her husband to the front on the Union side and became head of a company of Red Cross Nurses. Colonel Loomis died 10 years ago. He had no children and the death of Mrs. Loomis removes the last member of his family. His brothers and sisters were James C. Loomis of Bridgeport, Conn., Hezekiah B. and Robert Loomis of New York and Mrs. Abbie Hayden of Windsor, Conn. __________________________________________________ Mary Gilmore, History Room Seymour Library, Auburn, N.Y.
