McNITT, age 102, obituary, probably the Norwich Sun, June 1970 (Chenango Co., N.Y.) Mrs. Hattie L. McNITT, 102, of 64 Fair St., Norwich, died late Wednesday June 10, 1970, at her home after a short illness. She was born March 24, 1868, in McGraw, the daughter of Taleb and Mary Sharpe Smith. Mrs. McNitt and her family moved from McGraw to Norwich in 1872. On January 26, 1887 in Norwich, she was married to Charles E. McNitt, who died in 1925. For a period of 29 years Mrs. McNitt and her husband operated a farm on the Pratt Road, east of Norwich. Following her husband’s death, she became active as a practical nurse and continued in this work for 30 years. In 1937 she went to live with her daughter, Mrs. John (Freda) Dunn of Norwich, with whom she resided until her death. She had remained active until the last few weeks of her life and was known among her friends and neighbors for her baked goods. In addition to her baking skills, she was an expert seamstress. She combined this skill with her volunteer work for charitable organizations, particularly the Red Cross to which she donated innumerable quilts, lap robes and cancer dressings. An avid Democrat, she took pride in having never failed to cast her ballot at election time. Mrs. McNitt for many years was an active member of the Norwich Home Bureau and was a past chairman and life member. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Norwich and a former member of the Grand Eagle Lodge. In addition to Mrs. Dunn, she leaves another daughter Mrs. Fred (Hazel) Sission of Norwich. A third daughter Mrs. Viola Morehouse died in 1962. Also surviving are two sons, Jay and Lynn McNitt, both of Norwich; five grandchildren; Mrs. David (Evelyn) Walker, Lynn McNitt, Jr. and Edwin Morehouse, all of Norwich, Mrs. Bagio (Alice) Abbatiello of Cincinnatus and Robert J. Dunn of Bainbridge. Also surviving are several nephews and nieces including Mrs. Clara McLagan of East Guilford. Funeral and committal services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday from the Robert J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert L. Rodgers, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Norwich, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Norwich. Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
