State of New York} }Ss.: Columbia County } On this 28th day of February One thousand Eight hundred and thirty nine personally appeared before Josiah Knapp, one of the Judges of the Court Common Pleas in & for said county Columbia, Maria Kilmer, a resident of the Town of Copake in the said County , aged Eighty two years, who being duly sworn according to law do on her oath make make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefits of the provision made by the act of Congress passed July 4, 1836 and the act of congress passed March 3rd 1837. That she was married to Conrad Rossman by the Rev. W. Ries in the Town of Livingston in this County. That the said Conrad Rossman, as she is Informed & believes, served about six months in Capt. Wendell's Company in Colonel Van Schaick's Regiment. I was acquainted with said Conrad Rossman before I married him & know that he enlisted before I married him & his brother obliged his father to get a man in said Conrad's place. That her said husband after her marriage to him & about the time of the birth of her first child, a daughter named Magdelena, who was born in April of the year One thousand seven hundred and Eighty two, & was baptized by the Re. Mr. Ries, went into the Army of the Revolution as a volunteer. He went for 9 months. & went to guard the northern frontier of the State of New York. Who his officers were she cannot from want of recollection state. And she refers to the Pay Rolls of the levies of the State of New York in the year 1782 for said services. . She would also refer to the pay rolls of said Wendell's Company. She further declares that she was married to the said Conrad Rossman in the month of February One thousand Seven hundred & Eighty One, before his last service in the War of the Revolution expired. That her said husband the aforesaid Conrad Rossman died on the Eighth day of February Eighteen Hundred and Thirteen, being the February before the May when I married my second husband Adam A. Kilmer, who I married the month of May Eighteen hundred & thirteen & my said second husband died on the 2nd day of September 1832. And that she was a widow on the 4th of July 1836, and still remains a widow as will appear by proof, & as yet she has been unable to find any living witnesses who served with her said husband. That she refers to the certificate of the Rev. Mr. ***** hereto annexed to show that she was married to said Conrad Rossman before the last period of his service in the War of the Revolution expired, also to the other affidavits annexed. That she does not recollect any person now living who was present at her said marriage with said Conrad Rossman. Decker, late of Livingston in said County, deceased. That I am aged Sixty Eight years & that I have always resided in said County. My maiden name was Catherine Rossman. That Conrad Rossman, now deceased, was my brother, who died many years ago, and who at the time of his death left a surviving widow who is still living in Copake in said County of Columbia. My said Brother's Widow married many years ago Adam A. Kilmer, who died several years ago, leaving said Maria his widow, & who still remains a widow & resides with Adam A. Kilmer's Son Peter A. Kilmer in Copake aforesaid. My Brother said Conrad Rossman in the War of the Revolution went thrice. Once, before he was twenty one years of age, he enlisted in the Army & staid about Six months. This was before his said marriage with said Maria, now the widow of said Kilmer. My said Brother Conrad Rossman went the second time into the service &, as I understood, as one of the levies of the State, & after his first child was born or about the time of its birth, which was a daughter named Magdelena & is now the wife of Jacob Dykeman. I rember that when my said Brother was gone the second time his said wife lived near my father about one half mile *** **** **. I remember of staying with her, a girl, many nights while her husband was gone at that time. Wendell's 7th Company of Col. Van Schaick's 1st NY Regiment: "Rossman, Conrad, May 19, '77; for war, omt'd Nov. '77 M. R." The name Conrad I. Rossman appears in the payroll of Capt. Petrus Van Gaasbeck's Independent Company in the Fall of 1776. It is interesting that Conrad Rossman & Lieutenant John Shutts jointly stood bail for Dr. Thomas Thompson, Regimental Surgeon, when he was unjustly arrested for treating an enemy soldier, Minutes of the Commissioners for conspiracies, at p. 531. The Minutes also show that Jacob Power made an affidavit for Dr. Thompson's release. Rossman, Shuts and Power all were members of Van Gaasbeck's Company, a Company of volunteers recruited to weed out and supress the Tories! ) Conrad Rossman Pension file.
