Henry Livingston/ Certificate 27822 / 1 pound, 1 shilling & 4 pence. (Note: Lt. Col. Henry Livingston commanded the 10th Albany Militia Regiment.) _____________________________________________________________ (Note: Material below is from the file of the pension application of his children in 1846. The 1850 List of Rejected or Suspended Pensions indicates that a pension had previously been granted to his widow and then suspended with the following notation: "Suspended for proof of identity with the soldier of the rolls.") Palm Avenue Sarasota, Florida Dear Madam: You are advised that it appears from the papers in the Revolutionary War pension claim, W. 17042 that John Shutts was the son of Adam Shutts and was born December 16, 1753 in Storcky(?), Livingston Manor, Columbia County, New York. He enlisted January 3, 1777 and served as first sergeant in Captain Hicks' Company, Colonel Van Schaick's New York Regiment, was in the battle of Fort Stanwix, battle when Burgoyne was captured and the battle of Monmouth, and was discharged January 4, 1780. After the termination of this service he served as an orderly sergeant in the New York Militia, three months in 1780 in Captain Christopher Miller's Company, Colonel Graham's Regiment and in 1781 in Captain Shaver's Company. He married February 23, 1780, Hannah Bagley or Bagby. She was born March 24, 1763, and was married at the home of her father (his name not stated) in Hillsdale, New York. The soldier died May 23, 1801 in Hillsdale, New York. The widow, Hannah, died April 11, 1841 in Greenville, New York. The children of John Shutts and his wife Hannah- Peter born June 29, 1783, married Casiah or Kesia John " July 11, 1789 Bersey or Elisabeth born July 9, 1791, married David Baldwin Elenor " August 23, 1793, married ___ Waterman Adam " June 10, 1797 Louisa " February 24 1799. Hiller Assistant to Administrator _____________________________________________________________ State of New York} }Ss.: Columbia County } Joel Blackman of the town of Hillsdale, County of Columbia and State of New York, being duly sworn deposeth and saith that he was born in said Town on the 20th day of January in the year 1764 and is now in the eighty third year of his age. That he entered the service of the United States as a militia man in the month of August in the year 1780 by enlisting for the term of three months under Capt. Christopher Miller in the Regiment of which Colonel Graham was Commandant and Henry Livingston the Lieutenant Colonel, and the Company was mustered in said Town of Hillsdale. Deponent further saith that in August he went with Capt. Miller's Company to West Point on Hudson River where he became acquainted with John Shutts who belonged to said Regiment . Deponent further saith that he heard said Shutts say that he had come from the north, had been in the revolutionary service three years and had been regularly discharged. That he had been in the battle at Monmouth New Jersey and that he had been in several battles with Indians at the north. Deponent further says that while at West Point he was transferred to Capt. Williams Company in said Regiment and thsat he and said Shutts went with said Regiment to Albany where they were separated and Deponent was marched to Fort Edward. Deponent further says that he, this Deponent, and the said John Shutts both enlisted for the term of three months, and served out their terms of service, and that said John Shutts acted as orderly Sergeant in said Williams Company. Deponent further says that after the Revolutionary war the said John Shutts resided in the Town of Hillsdale for a number of years and until his death. Deponent further says that he was for a number of years a near neighbor to said Shutts and was well acquainted with said Shutts and his family. Deponent had frequently heard said Shutts say that he was born at a place then called Storchy in the Manor of Livingston in said County of Columbia. Deponent further says that before the close of the Revolutionary War Said John Shutts married Hannah Bagley, whose parents lived in said Town of Hillsdale and were well known to this Deponent. Deponent further says that he was well acquainted with said Hannah Bagley before and after she married the said John Shutts. Deponent further says that said John Shutts and Hannah, his wife, had seven children previous to his death, four sons and three daughters. That the names of the sons were Peter, John, Adam and Josiah, and the names of the daughters were Betsey, Eleanor and Lousia. Joel Blackman - of Hillsdale - Oct 9, 1846. Born in Hillsdale 20th Jan'y 1764. 82 years. Entered service in Militia in Aug 1780 for 3 mos. Under Capt. Chris'r Miller under Col. Graham & Lt. Col Henry Livingston - mustered in Hillsdale. Went with Comp'y to West Pt. Where became acquainted with John Shutts who belonged to regt. - Shuts said he had come from the north - had been in service 3 yrs & discharged. Had been at Bat. of Monmouth & in several Bat's with the Indians at the north. Dep't was transferred to Capt. Wm.'s Co & went with Shutts to Albany, where they were separated & depo't was marched to Ft Edw'd. Both depo't & Shutts enlisted for 3 mos. & served out their time - Shutts was Orderly Serg't. in Miller's Co. After war Shutts resided in Hillsdale a number of years until his death. Shutts told him he was born in Storky on the Manor of Livingston [Columbia Co.] Before close of war Shutts married Hannah Bayleywith whom dep't. was well acquainted, before & after her marriage. 7 children. 4 sons & 3 daughters. (names them as above0 knew John a no. of years. Peter Benham - of Livingston, Columbia Co. Jany. 18, 1847 Was born in Claverack (same Co.) 1761. - Was called out in militia a short time in revolution & served in Capt. Osterhout's Co. - & Col. H'y Van Rensselear's Reg't on the Mohawk. Personally knew John & Peter Suutts, sons of Adam, John Shutts, John Decker & Jacob Van Debo, enlisted in one Co. ot Reg't which was stationed in a Ft. on German Flatts as he and Jacob Van Debo say - and served for three months. Peter Shutts enlisted some time after, but can't recollect his officers. John Shutts married Hannah Bayley, of Hillsdale, formerly Marbeltown. G. Van Schaick Wm. Chase - of Gent (same Co.) Mar. 12, 1847. Born in Bucks Co. Pa. in 1761. - In infancy removed to Livingston, Columbia Co. Deponent served in militia under Capt. Addy Ten Broeck and Capt. Jno. Smith - he became acquainted with John & Peter Shuts, sons of Adam - "Well recollects that John Shutts, john Decker and Jacob Van Deboe and Peter Shutts enlisted in the war of the Revolution for the term of three years " - That the three former "enlisted at one time & served in one Company and one Regiment." Cannot their officers names. Van Deboe came home on furlough & said his Company was stationed at Fort Stanwix [Fort Stanwix & Fort Schuyler were either the same or in close proximity. The muster rolls in 79 are dated at Fort Schuyler.] John Shutts enlisted as orderly Sergeant - He and Van Deboe served out their time & Van Deboe showed deponent his discharge. John Shutts married Hannah Bagley & Van Deboe married ____illegible. Muster Rolls 3-7 and 33-4. In Fort Schuyler in 1777 - in May 78 in Chester, NJ. - In Aug. 78 in Springfield, Essex Co. - Later at White Plains - and in 79 at Schenectady etc. Showing that this regt. was with the main army at the Battle of Monmouth and that the major part of the service was "at the north" etc. See also the Annals of Tyron Co. - pp. 122.143 & 162, showing that Col. Van Schaick was in Command under General Clinton of the forces that served against the Onondaga & other Indians up the Mohawk in 1779. These rolls also show the name John Shutts - always spelled Shutts. - Also that he commenced as 4th Sergt. And closed as 3rd Sergt. Cert's of Comptroller of NY. - Pay'ts to Jno. Shutts - Sergt. Oct. 30, 1780 & Oct 17, 1781. - A copy made about 1841 from the original family record of John Shutts shows the marriage Feby. 23rd, 1780. Also sworn to by Hannah West, who testified that she copied it with perfect accuracy etc. - and by Keziah Shutts, her mother - They all stated that at the time this copy was made they had no thought that the clamiant's mother had been entitled to a pension, but it was coppied for the sole reason that the original was greatly defaced and torn, tho the figures were plainly distinguishable. John Shutts enlisted in the militia as orderly Sergt. After his 3 yrs. Service -- Knows of no record of these men's service or of any surviving comrads of the same company. Certificate of Sec'y of State of NY Mar. 18, 1847 Of the service of John Shutts - John Shutts & Jacob Van Deboe, as above. Prudence Pauley - Nov. 30, 1849 - Daughter of Benj'm Bayley - (Brother of Hannah Halleck) After John Shutts death Hannah married Wm. Halleck, & removed to Greenville, Green Co., & after his death she lived with her son John. Elias Bixby - Columbia Co. - Sept. 1847. Born & reared in Hillsdale (formerly Nobletown) Well knew John Shutts & Hannah, whose family name was Bayley - Knew children. John always reported Rev'y Soldier. After his death Hannah married Wm. Halleck, & removed to Greenville. Does not recall dates of deaths. Peter Benham - B. in 1761. Jan'y 18, 1647. Was called out in the Militia a short time in Capt john Osterhout's Co., Col. Henry Van Rensselear's Reg't. on Mohawk River.Was ********* acquainted with John Shutts & Peter Shutts, sons of Adam Shutt, and do very well recollect that John Shutts, John Decker 7 John van Deboe enlisted in one company in the Regiment stationed in a fort on German Flatts, and he heard Jacob Van Deboe say was in the Revolutionary service of the war for his time of three years, and Peter Shutts enlisted some time after, & the above John Shutts married Hannah Bayley. William Chase - B. in 1761. March 1st, 1847. Served in the war of the revolution in the militia of this State & afterwards in Co. of which John Smith was Capt. At this time deponent became acquainted with John Shutts & Peter Shutts, sons of Adam Shutts, & well recollects **** of John Shutts, John Decker, and Jacob Van Debo & Peter Shutts enlisted in the service of the Revolution for the term of three years.
