Butterfield, Henry/ W.F. 23733/ N.H. Service Oct 8, 1832, Henry Butterfield, of Sidney, Delaware Co, NY, aged 74 years, deposed: that he enlisted at Westmoreland, NH, Jan 1778, under Capt. Reynolds, Col. Peabody, NH state troops, went to Rhode Island and served under Generals Greene and Sullivan through that campaign and until the term of one year had expired; when he was discharged at Providence, R.I. by General Sullivan; that before this in the spring of 1777 he enlisted from Keene, NH as a minuteman for six months under Capt. Blake; served at White River, VT, in pursuit of the Indians and was at the taking of Burgoyne's army at Stillwater, NY; and also that he volunteered and went on several alarms at different times, and refers for further evidence to the former application transmitted under the law of 1818, which was not allowed. Henry Butterfield (The application referred to does not appear to be on file, B.M.D.) Sep 12, 1832, Solomon Robbins testified that in 1778 the state of NH called for a quota of militia men for one year's service in Revolution and that Henry Butterfield, Timothy Butterfield and Isaac Cobb were enlisted from Westmoreland, NH. Solomon Robbins Jul 15, 1833, Abijah H. Beach testified that when Butterfield made his application he had answered the usual questions which were not forwarded as it was not considered necessary, but now he sends them: Butterfield was born in Westford, MA in 1759; lived in Westmoreland and Keene, NH during the Revolution; after the war lived in Greenwich, (?), Worcester Co, MA about 30 years, then in Otsego Co, NY for 10 or 11 years; and the last 6 years in Sidney, Delaware Co, NY; that he served at the northward under Major Timothy Butterfield; was in the battle of Bennington and his messmate Thrall was killed by his side in that battle, etc. Abijah H. Beach Jun 1, 1833, Rev. Samuel Manning, of Masonville, and Samuel Butterfield of Sidney, both towns being in Delaware Co, NY, certified to their belief in soldier's veracity, etc. Jul 15, 1833, Rachel Butterfield, aged nearly 70 years, testified that she married Henry Butterfield in 1783; that her two brothers, John Thayer and Samuel Thayer, who were in the battle at R.I., and Samuel was wounded in that battle; she has heard them say that Henry Butterfield was also in that battle. She also testified that she was well acquainted with Major Timothy Butterfield, Henry's uncle, and knows that Henry enlisted as a private under his uncle. She recollects perfectly hearing the neighbors say that Henry was at the surrender of Burgoyne; that she saw said army after they were taken, as they passed through Rutland, MA, near which place she then lived, etc. Signed by mark. Claim allowed Nov 28, 1833, for service as private 6 months, 22 days. Dec 29, 1838, Rachel Butterfield, of Unadilla, Otsego Co, NY, "aged 76 years last November, 13th day", deposed: that she is the widow of Henry Butterfield, Revolutionary pensioner, who died Oct 30, 1833 and that she was married to him Nov 20, 1783. Signed by mark in presence of a Supreme Court Commissioner, Charles C. Noble, who testified that she made a mark because her hands shook so she could not write. Samuel Butterfield, son of Henry and Rachel Butterfield, testified to the death of his father, etc. Samuel Butterfield Certificate from the town clerk of Hardwick, MA; that among the list of marriages performed by Paul Mundell, Justice of the Peace for Worcester Co, MA, is recorded: Henry Butterfield, of Greenwich, and Rachel Thayer of Hardwick, Nov 30, 1783. Another declaration of Rachel Butterfield, of Tompkins, Delaware Co, NY dated Oct 9, 1839, is also on file. Claim allowed. Aug 10, 1843, Rachel Butterfield of Tompkins, Delaware Co, NY, aged 70 years [sic], applied under a later Act and certificate 3564, Albany, NY Agency, was issued Dec 9, 1843, Act of Mar 3, 1843.
