Know ye that at Poughkeepsie in Dutchess County on the second day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirteen before George Bloom Esquire then being Surrogate of our said County, the last will and testament of Alexander Thompson deceased (a copy whereof is hereunto annexed) was proved and allowed of by us and the administration of all and singular the goods, chattels and credits of the said deceased and any way concerning his will was duly granted to Robert Thompson one of the Executors in said will named. And it being made satisfactorily to appear to Derick Stockholm Esquire our present Surrogate of Dutchess County, that the said Robert Thompson Executor as aforesaid has lately departed this life without fully administering the goods, chattels and credits of the said Alexander Thompson deceased. And Sophia Thompson the Executrix in the will of the said Alexander Thompson deceased, named, having appeared before Derick Stockholm Esquire our Surrogate of Dutchess County and took the oath of an Executor prescribed by law. And the said deceased having whilst he lived and at the time of his death goods, chattels or credits within this state, by means whereof the proving and registering the said will and the granting of administration of all and singular the said goods, chattels and credits of the said deceased and also the Auditing, allowing and final discharging the account thereof doth belong unto us the administration of all and singular goods, chattels and credits and anything concerning the will of the said Alexander Thompson deceased, is granted to the said Sophia Thompson the Executrix thereof, she being first duly sworn ... faithfully to administer the same and to make and exhibit a true and ... inventory of the goods, chattels and credits and also to render a just and true account thereof when thereunto required. In the name of God Amen I Alexander Thompson of the town of Rhinebeck county of Dutchess and State of New York, Land Surveyer, calling to mind the certainty of Death & the uncertain time thereof especially as this present time in an uncommon time of sickness apparently pestilential and of death and as my health at the time of writing these presents is in a very delicate and precarious state but of sound and sober mind memory & understanding do make and ordain this my Last will & testament in manner and form following: Should I depart this life in Rhinebeck my body to be committed to the earth as near as possible to the grave of my ever by me lamented and dear-deceased wife Elizabeth Anne, my soul to the mercy of a good God hoping for mercy and forgiveness thro the merits of our great Redeemer Jesus Christ as to the worldly substance with which the Lord has pleased to bless my Industry I give devise and dispose of in the following manner, that is to say, First my personal estate not otherwise disposed of hereafter in the underwritten devises to be inventoried and sold on good Security within three months after my decease or sooner if convenient at the discretion of my Executors & Executrix herein after named, my real estate to be sold as soon as may be not exceeding the next first day of May after my decease if I should depart this Life any time before the first day of January in any year subsequent to the date of these presents at the discretion of my Executors and any part which I may bequeath to any minor of my children to be let out in good hands with security by Mortgage as is also the sum which is to be reserved as a fund for my present wife Sophia's sum annual Salary as underwritten and also of the part I shall bequeath to my Second daughter Charlotte P. Raddy the Interest however of all such monies to be regularly collected half yearly in May & November in each year and paid out as herein after directed my just debts and funeral charges to be paid and my outstanding debts to be collected as soon as convenient after my decease & I hereby enjoin my son Alexander may be put to some business as soon as possible after my decease at the discretion of my Executors if not already at some business his consent to be consulted as to the calling or business out of the Proceeds of my personal estate. I give and bequeath unto my said wife Sophia a present of Forty dollars and to my daughter Nancy a present of twenty dollars exclusive of their further shares hereafter bequeathed. I give and bequeath unto my son Alexander my watch to be preserved for him until he is eighteen years of age. To my son Robert the use of my surveying compass & chain, Instruments, Maps & Surveying books both in Manuscript and printed to be by him preserved & kept in repair until my son Alexander shall attain the age of twenty one years at which time the said compass, chain, Instruments & Books are to be delivered to my said son Alexander exclusive of my other devises to him. I will that a sum of seven hundred & fourteen dollars be put out on Good Land Security with half yearly payments of Interest and said Interest regularly paid to my said wife Sophia during her natural life or widowhood but on her marrying again or her decease to cease and the principal to be called in & divided equally between my children their heirs or Assigns the residue arising from the sales of my real & personal property (including my outstanding debts which are to be called in) to be divided as follows: To my daughter Catherine. Catherine should she Survive me one equal eighth part of the whole to my son Robert or his heirs one eighth part, to my son Alexander one eighth part to be secured as above and paid to him when he comes of Lawful age, to my Daughter Nancy one eighth part, to my Daughter Arabella one eighth part, to my Daughter Charlotte one hundred Dollars, to my Grand son Alexander Raddy one hundred dollars, to Charlotte & Catherine Raddy each one hundred dollars, which sum of three hundred dollars to said Grand children to be secured as above mentioned until they become of Lawful age their part to go to the Survivors of said children of my said daughter Charlotte. I bequeath also to my daughter Sally Beecher or her heirs one eighth part of the whole excepting one hundred dollars which I think proper to Stop from her part in consideration of what I have already done for her. I give and bequeath to my son John (provided he survives me) the sum of three hundred dollars but my Executors hereafter named are directed to pay unto John Waldron of New York any sums of money which they may find to be due to him justly by my said son John to be paid out of said three hundred dollars. I also direct that on the decease of my sons John & Robert or either of them before said monies are paid that the same shall not go into the hands of their or either of their widows but kept on Interest as above directed which interest is to be paid annually toward their education & support but if the Lawful issue of my said son John should decease while under age the part laid up for the same to revert to any heirs equally. Also the monies bequeathed as above to the three children of my said daughter Charlotte not to come into her hands but be regulated as directed in the Last clauses respecting the children of my said sons John & Robert. I also direct that any monies or costs which I am bound to pay or may pay for my son Robert shall be considered as part of his share. I direct that in addition to the Goods which my said wife Sophia has brought in my family on our marriage she may have a tea table, six windsor chairs, the blue curtains, sufficient bed clothes, sheets, blankets, quilts & pillow cases for two changes for her bed, also six silver spoons with tea things and kitchen furniture for one Room, she is to have her choice of the beds, any beds or bedding (not already their own) which any unmarried daughters may wish to retain on disposal of the property to be taken out of their Respective shares, any Books not my own to be Returned to the owners. Lastly, I make, ordain & constitute my son Robert Thompson my Brother-in-law James Thompson of New York, Doctor David Tomlinson of Rhinebeck my Executors & my wife Sophia my Executrix of this my Last will & testament.
