Lewis Historical Pub. Company, pub. about 1947 (?) Vol. 3 Biographies CHARLES H. DIEFENDORF As president of the Marine Trust Company of Buffalo, Charles H. Diefendorf occupies a position of leadership and high standing in business circles in this region of New York State. Mr. Diefendorf was born February 22, 1890, in Buffalo, New York, son of Warren J. and Caroline (Haas) Diefendorf. After completing his formal schooling, Charles H. Diefendorf became associated with the Marine Trust Company in 1907 as a messenger. Gradually his talents came to he recognized by members of the organization. and more and more important duties were placed on his shoulders. Rising in the ranks of those connected with this company, he won promotion after promotion until, in 1931, he was made executive vice-president. He became a director of the Marine Trust Company in 1934, then was made president in 1942. Continuing down to the time of writing as president of the Marine Trust Company, Mr. Diefendorf is also active in other business enterprises. He is president and a director of the Marine Midland Corporation, a director of the Marine Midland Trust Company of New York, and also holds directorships in the Peter Cooper Corporation. the American Steamship Company of Buffalo, the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railway Company, the International Salt Company, the General Baking Company, Dunlop Tire & Rubber Corporation, and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Buffalo Branch. Mr. Diefendorf served in World War I and went Overseas in 1917 as a first sergeant in the 78th Division. While in France he was commissioned a second lieutenant of the Infantry—4th Division, and was with the Army of Occupation until 1919. In addition, Mr. Diefendorf is a supporter of worthy civic, social and cultural undertakings. He serves on the council of the University of Buffalo, is a director of the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy, director of the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce, president of the Buffalo Club (1946), director of the Buffalo Foundation, director of the Buffalo Historical Society, director of the Buffalo Museum of Science, director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Society, director of the Millard Fillmore Hospital, member of the advisory board of the Children’s Hospital, director of the Kleinhans Music Hall, member of the New York State Bankers Committee on International Monetary Affairs, trustee of Nichols School, New York State Committee member of the War Finance Committee, trustee of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis and a member of the New York State Advisory Committee. He is a member of the Bankers' Club of New York, and the Links, the Buffalo Club, the Saturn Club and the Buffalo Country Club. Charles H. Diefendorf married, in 1918, Charlotte Wilke. They became the parents of two children, Charlotte and David Diefendorf. The Diefendorfs live at No. 216 Woodbridge Avenue, Buffalo, and Mr. Diefendorf has his offices at the Marine Trust Company headquarters, Main and Seneca Streets.
