COLBERT GIVES SPEECH, ERIE COUNTY, NEW YORK Copyright(c) 2002 by Margaret Logan-Behrns http://www.usgwarchives.org/copyright.htm ******************************************************** SOURCE: BUFFALO EVENING NEWS -VOL. XXXIV - NO. 145 - September 27, 1897 SUSPENDED THE POLICE CHIEF It Is Said That the Indianapolis Officer Got Drunk and Made a Speech for The Opposition With 5 candidates for Mayor in the field in Indianapolis, the political pot is seething and the situation has been aggravated by an incident which occured a day or so ago. It appears that Chief of Police Colbert, who has been doing campaign work for Mayor Taggert, attended a Republican meeting at Yellow Bridge the other evening and insisted on climbing on the platform and making a speech for Judge Stubbs, the Republican candidate for Police Judge. Stubbs is running against the Democratic Police Judge nominee, Charles Cox. It is charged that Colbert was under the influence when he arrived at the Yellow Bridge meeting and created a sensation at the speaker's stand. Friends dragged his back and prevented him from making the speech, but the papers were full of the matter and Mayor Taggert was forced to suspend Colbert, pending investigation. Democrats fear Colbert's actions have given Taggert a blow that will hurt him when the votes are counted.
