JOHN BRADY ASSAULTED, ERIE COUNTY, NEW YORK Copyright(c) 2002 by Margaret Logan-Behrns http://www.usgwarchives.org/copyright.htm ******************************************************** SOURCE: BUFFALO EVENING NEWS -VOL. XXXIV-NO. 145 - September 27, 1897 SEVENTH PRECINCT LOAFERS They Are Making Life Miserable In Elk Street and Capt. Lynch Should Get After Them The Seventh Precinct, principally in Elk street, is infested with hoodlums and corner loafers, ranging from 10 to 20 years of age. Complaints about these loafers are received at this office nearly every day. One of the principal diversions of this miscreants is to throw stones and horse chestnuts at drivers. John Brady of 140 Hopkins street, an old and respected citizen of Buffalo, has been especially unfortunate and he justly complains of the police. Mr. Brady has several teams at work on the William street grade crossing, one of which he drives himself. His work takes him through Elk street every day. He has been repeatedly stoned, and the other day was hit on the head and so badly injured he (illegible) man to drive his team home. Mr. Brady is a man 70 years old, a tax payer, and has lived in Buffalo 40 years. Capt. Lynch of the Seventh Precinct would better emulate the example of Capt. Taylor and Capt. Forrestel, who have practically ridded the first and third precincts of street loafing. A few policeman and citizen clothes would do the business very effectively. _______________
