WILLIAM CONNELL INJURED, ERIE COUNTY, NEW YORK Copyright(c) 2002 by Margaret Logan-Behrns http://www.usgwarchives.org/copyright.htm ******************************************************** SOURCE: BUFFALO EVENING NEWS -VOL.XXXIV - NO.145 - September 27, 1897 STICK FELL ON HIM (Special to the evening news) NIAGARA FALLS, Sept 27 - The grand celebration of the opening of the new steel arch bridge, which has been in progress here for the last three days under the auspices of the Grand Trunk Railway Company, was concluded tonight with another grand pyrotechnical display. The feature of the evening was the illumination from the bridge of the words, "Pan-American, 1899." As this significant piece was lighted a shout of applause went up from the crowds on both sides of the river. During the discharge of the heavy rockets one of the sticks fell into the crowd on the American side and struck William Connell of Fifteenth street, rendering him unconscious. He was taken to the Frontier Hotel and Dr. McCarthy was summoned. The sharp end of the rocket had pierced Connell's shoulder and the shock injured his spine. He is still unconscious and in precarious condition. The celebration was a complete success. The weather could not have been better and the crowds were enormous. _________________
