She was born March 10, 1929 in Buffalo, the daughter of the late Walter and Klementena (Cackiewicz) Patty. Mrs. Farnham was employed by H&R Block in Buffalo. She was a member of the Lily Dale Spiritualist Church, where she was an organist and the Zonta Club. A pianist, she belonged to the Gruio Choir. One niece, Rebecca Larson, of Lockport, survives. Kavanagh, Ruth Monita (nee Akehurst) Of Port Colborne, Ontario, died at the Hamilton General Hospital, Saturday, November 20, 2004 at the age of 82 years. She was born January 23, 1922 in Sparks, Maryland. Mrs. Kavanagh attended the University of Maryland, and then worked in Ottawa, Ontario, New York, New York, Baltimore, Maryland and Washington D.C. for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. She was also the first delegate to be selected to participate in the newly formed International Farm Youth Exchange, a two-way extension service program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1948, for which she traveled to Britain and Denmark. After marrying, she helped her husband Jean run Kavanagh's Bakery in Baltimore, Maryland. Mrs. Kavanagh was a strong believer in the importance of being involved in the community in which she lived. She volunteered often and in many diverse areas, especially considering that she raised 3 children and her husband traveled extensively as part of his work. Over the past 50 years she was a member of the Optimisses in Timonium, Maryland, President of the Port Colborne District of Community Living Assn., member of the Port Colborne Hospital Women's Auxiliary, a driver for Meals-on-Wheels and cancer patients, a reader for the visually impaired, volunteer for Out-of-the-Cold, a member of the St. James Anglican Church Women and Altar Guild, and a staunch supporter at Roselawn Center. As a bridge player for over 40 years, Ruth spent many hours playing bridge in several bridge groups. She enjoyed traveling throughout Canada and the United States in addition to visiting Hong Kong, Korea and Western Europe to satisfy her great yen for experiencing new cultures and people. Mrs. Kavanagh is survived by her son Robert and his wife Johanna of Thunder Bay, Ontario; daughters Deborah and Sharon of Columbia, Maryland; and granddaughter Kelly of Barrie, Ontario as well as many loved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Jean Angelo Kavanagh, parents Virginia W. and Robert P. Akehurst and her sister Elaine Moses. Mrs. Kavanagh's children wish to thank the professional and compassionate staff at the Hamilton and Welland General Hospitals. Visitation for Mrs. Kavanagh will be on Friday at St. James Anglican Church from 12:30 PM until the time of the service at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Canon Jim Powell officiating. Cremation to follow.
