A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 14, 2:30 PM at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Greensboro. Al was born August 19, 1919 in Buffalo, NY, the son of the late Alfred Corry and Florence Horton Corry. He graduated from Lafayette High School in Buffalo, where he participated in most sports and later attend Syracuse University on a rowing scholarship. As an oarsman at Buffalo's West Side Rowing Club, he rowed on heavy, eight-oared crews which won National Championships in 1938 and 1939 and the Canadian Henley Regatta also in 1939. For a lifetime, he remained passionate about this sport and West Side Rowing Club. A proud veteran of World War II, he began his military career as a mounted trooper in the 121st Cavalry, New York National Guard. He left this unit after it was called to active duty and redesignated as the 102nd Anti Aircraft Battalion, for training as an Air Cadet. Serving as a bombardier-navigator with the Eighth Army Air Force, 387th Bomb Group, he participated in 72 combat missions, including two on D-Day. He attained the rank of Captain and was awarded the Air Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart and the Jubilee of Victory. Upon returning from overseas, he was assigned to the AAF Personnel Distribution Command as an Air Forces Liaison Office. Before becoming disabled by a stroke in 1986, Al enjoyed camping, bow hunting, golf and antique cars. After becoming disabled, his hobby was writing. A collection of his writings, Random Reminiscences, was printed in 1997. These stories and recollections are a testament to his being a member of 'The Greatest Generation.' Al is survived by his wife, Merla Swaim Corry, four children, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchildren.
