Canavan D.D.S., John J. Queensbury; Dr. John Canavan, 76, of Queensbury, NY passed away after a long illness at the Fort Hudson Health Care Facility in Fort Edward, NY. Born June 22, 1929 in Glens Falls, NY, he was the son of the late John and Loretta (Danahy) Canavan, of Fort Edward, NY. Dr. Canavan graduated as valedictorian from Fort Edward High School, Class of 1947. He received his predental education at St. Bonaventure University and graduated from the Georgetown University School of Dentistry, Class of 1953. Upon graduation, he entered the United States Air Force and remained on active duty until 1956. He continued to proudly serve in the Air Force on reserve status until his retirement after 20 years in 1977, achieving the rank of Lt. Colonel. Durning reserve duty he was assigned as a staff member of the Tri-County Detachment of theCivil Air Patrol and was the area liaison officer for the United States Air Force Academy. Military service offered him an opportunity to travel extensively throughout Europe and North Africa, where he developed into a skilled amateur photographer. His family treasures his collections of photographic accounts. Dr. Canavan practiced dentistry in Glens Falls, NY for 40 years at his office on Ridge Street, retiring in 1997. He was very proud of the care he provided and the friendships he established over the years in practice. He was actively involved in the Upper Hudson Dental Society and served on the staff at the Glens Falls Hospital for a number of years. he was a longtime member of the Glens Falls Country Club, B.P.O.E. Lodge 81, Glens Falls and an honorary member of the Glens Falls Knights of Columbus. He immensely enjoyed the camaraderie of his friends at those establishments. Besides his parents, he was pre-deceased by his sister M. Janet Felske and her husband Herbert Felske. He is survived by his wife Susanna (Schuster) Canavan, of Queensbury; daughter Connie O'Brien and her husband Patrick, of Buffalo; two sons Patrick Canavan and his wife Julie (Yerdon) and Kevin Canavan, all of Queensbury; three grandchildren, Christine O'Brien, Catlin and Gillian Canavan; one niece, two nephews and several cousins.
