He enlisted in the Navy in January of 1941 and served four years aboard the U.S.S. Iowa in The Pacific Theater. He was alongside the U.S.S. Missouri when surrender papers were signed in 1945. After the war, he was employed at Simmonds Saw and Steel Mill until his retirement. Gus loved music, liked to sing and enjoyed animals, especially his cats. In the past year, Mr. Layer resided in Cheektowaga under the care of his loving niece, Shirley Van De Water.
