Published in the Buffalo News on 7/2/2005. Eckles, Charles Carl Born on June 12, 1916, in Martins Ferry, Ohio, to Arthur and Betty Arnold. He married Dorothy Robert Sorrells on March 10, 1937, in Columbus, Ohio. They moved to Barboursville, W. VA., where son Marcellus LaJune Eckles was born on February 24, 1939. Later that same year, he moved his family to Lackawanna, NY where he began working for the Bethlehem Steel Corporation. A second son, Frederick Kenneth Eckles was born on June 27, 1943. To further support his growing family, he drove a taxi in his off hours. In 1955 he purchased land in Angola, NY. On this land, he began laying the foundation to the home which became the scene of many memorable family gatherings over the next 35 years. A family which included the birth of a daughter, Lorna Kay Eckles on January 28, 1959. He retired from Bethlehem Steel on January 1, 1978. However, retired did not slow him down. He kept active by taking on small jobs such as working for the Town of Evans at the town park and small boat harbor, gardening, and with his grandchildren. Tiring of the winters in Buffalo, he moved back to Columbus, Ohio. On Saturday, June 25, 2005 Charles Carl Eckles ascended from this life at 3:15 PM at Grand Medical Center in the presence of his beloved family. His ascension was preceded by that of his wife Dorothy R. Eckles, son Marcellus L. Eckles; daughter-in-law Rose M. Eckles and great-grandson Nassir X. Minor. He leaves to mourn, son Frederick K. Eckles Sr. and daughter Lorna K. Eckles, as well as daughter-in-law Gwendolyn; granddaughters, Terreia J. Eckles, Tyia M. Minor, Tiffany L. Eckles and Nicole L. Eckles; grandsons Frederick K. Jr., Lamont K. Eckles Sr. and Marcellus L. Eckles Jr.; nine great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Claudia M. Boyer, a host of nieces and nephews; and countless numbers of friends. Funeral Mass will be conducted at 2 PM, Wednesday June 28,2005 at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, Huntington, W. VA, by Father Livinus Uba. Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington, W.VA. The viewing will be held one hour before the mass at the church.
