Brown, Betty Butzer Age 78, died June 19 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, NH. She was born in Hackensack, NJ on June 20, 1925, the daughter of Katharine Coe Butzer and Albert G. Butzer, D.D. Mrs. Brown was brought up in Buffalo where she attended the School of Practice, the Park School, and Westminister Presbyterian Church, where her father, Dr. Butzer, served as Pastor from 1932 to 1952. She graduated in 1944 from the Buffalo Seminary, where she later taught History and Social Studies for five years. She received her BA in Economics from Smith College in 1948. She married John Willoughby Brown, also of Buffalo, at Westminister Presbyterian Church on July 11, 1953. Mrs. Brown was a devoted Navy wife and homemaker, moving her family with her husband's career as an officer in the US Navy, to Newport, RI, Jacksonville, FL, Arlington and Vienna, VA, and other cities, where she enjoyed becoming involved in her community and welcoming other Navy wives and their families. Mrs. Brown was a very active with the Buffalo Seminary Alumnae Association, the Smith College Alumnae Association, and Planned Parenthood of Northern New England. Mrs. Brown was also a dedicated volunteer for cultural and charitable organizations, including the Junior League, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Girl Scouts. She also enjoyed international travel with her husband, golf, tennis, gardening, reading, corresponding with her friends and caring for her family. She was a resident of Hanover, NH area since 1977. Mrs. Brown is survived by her husband, Captain John Willoughby Brown, USN, Retired, of West Lebanon, NH; two brothers, Albert George Butzer, Jr. of Ontario, NY, and Clayton Coe Butzer of Lebanon, NJ; four daughters, Margaret Robinson Brown of Bronxville, NY, Susan Coe Brown of Glenn Dale, MD, Carolyn Brown Wick of Hillsborough, CA and Elizabeth Brown Filkorn of Richmond, VT; seven nieces and nephews; six grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH at 1:00 PM on July 8, with the Reverend Albert George Butzer III officiating.
