Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna. Born in Yauco, Puerto Rico, Mrs. Alvarez was a senior companion at West Seneca Developmental Center for fifteen years. She lived in God's Word in sharing and helping others. Active in her Church, she was a eucharistic minister, a member of the choir and a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She was a sponsor of children in need and a translator for refugees and helped to place them. She was active in the Mexican Club, where her husband was one of the founders. She was devoted to her family and is survived by her loving husband of 55 years Herbert F. Knauss Jr., mother of Gail Renning (Bob), Janet Duncan (Don), Joan Seriale (Joe), Gary, Jeff, Glenn and Jay Knauss; grandmother of Chris, Kelly, Chad, Greg, Alissa, Destinee, Kevin, Katie and Alan who were a great joy to her. A Presbyterian devoted to helping others, she viewed her volunteer work more than an obligation but was a calling to render faithful service to others. A graduate of Millard Fillmore School of Nursing in Buffalo, NY, she enlisted and served as a US Army nurse in the China, Burma, India theater in World War II. Moving to Phoenix in 1960, she raised a large family but also dedicated many hours to volunteer service including Phoenix First Presbyterian Church, Interfaith Cooperative Ministries, Handicapper Outreach for Christ, Casa (Court Appointed Advocate), Phoenix Indian Medical Center Auxiliary-President, Cancer Information-line Volunteer, Reading for Adobe Mountain Inmate, Longview School Election Board. Doris loved to learn and once her family was raised, she returned to school and proudly received her BA from Arizona State University in 1988. She had a second home in Flagstaff and loved to spend time there relaxing and gardening and reading.
