Al Criqui, 66 died October 26 after a brief fight with cancer at his home in San Diego, CA. He was born and raised in Buffalo, New York and had lived in San Diego County since 1978. Al attended Saint Joe's Collegiate Institute in Buffalo and received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame in 1961. He was a proud supporter of the Fighting Irish his entire life. During his career, he received an M.S. in Systems Management and an M.B.A. Al retired in 2000 from Solar Turbines in San Diego where he was Director of Engineering and Technical Services. Al was involved with high performance turbomachinery for nearly 40 years and was associated with the American Petroleum Institute, Southern Gas Association, International Gas Turbine Institute, University of Virginia Rotating Machinery and Controls Consortium, Texas A&M University Turbomachinery Symposium, the American Association for Artificial Intelligence and was Solar's Representative to the University of Virginia's Research Consortium. Al enjoyed traveling for both work and pleasure and had visited 48 of the 50 US states in addition to countries around the world. He was a great fan of motor sports, drove a sports car whenever possible and attended the Bondurant School of High Performance Driving on his 60th birthday. Al was an active ham radio operator and held an extra class license with call sign N6GY. He was a member of the Board of Directors for the San Diego County YMCA Resident Camps. Al is survived by his wife of 44 years, Carol; sons Kevin and Steven; daughters, Marianne and Julia and grandchildren, Zachary, Abigail, Tobias, Jessica, Lydia and Katherine; brother Donald and sisters Rosemary and Claire.
