Published in the Buffalo News on 9/9/2005. Cowan, Sara (Zelnick) Age 82, of Naples, Florida unexpectedly died on Friday, August 5, 2005. Born in Ottawa, Canada, she moved to Buffalo, NY in 1945 soon after her marriage and resided there for 35 years, moving to Naples in 1977. Mrs. Cowan was an advocate for community service and served on the Board of Directors and was vice president of Sunrise Children's Foundation in Naples. She was an active volunteer throughout her life. Sara was extraordinary in her ability to engage the people around her and extended her love to others. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. She is the wife of the late Albert Cowan, a founder of Tops Markets, and is survived by four children, Wendy Wald of Naples, FL; Michael Cowan and his wife Roberta Kass of Los Angeles, CA; Laurie Cowan and her husband Ric Phillips of Newton, MA; and, Larry Cowan and his wife Margie of Boca Raton, FL. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services have been held. John C. Fr. John C. Murphy, OFM, age 77, of St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church, died peacefully on September 6th, 2005 in Hartford, Connecticut. 'Fr. Murph' (as he was affectionately known), was born in Buffalo, New York on November 16th, 1927 to the late Mortimer and Ellen (Downey) Murphy. After high school he attended St. Joseph Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, New York. He was received into the Franciscan Friars of Holy Name Province in Paterson, New Jersey on August 12, 1948 and professed vows on August 13th 1949. After completion of studies in both Philosophy and Theology, he was ordained a priest on May 5th, 1954 in Washington, D.C. After his initial teaching career at Siena College, Fr. Murphy went on to graduate studies at the University of Notre Dame and received Master's and Doctoral Degrees in Medieval History. Returning to Siena College in Loudonville, New York he taught History, Art History and Architecture. From 1979-1988 he served as Academic Vice President of the College. After completing a sabbatical with studies in Theology, Fr. Murphy as called to serve as Pastor of St. Stephen of Hungary Church in New York City until 1993 when he became associate pastor of St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church, Hartford, Connecticut. John had a life-long interest in painting with his work being featured in the opening of the Clare Gallery at the Franciscan Center for Urban Ministry at Hartford. An accomplished cook and gardner, he was a quiet man with a gentle manner in his ministry to others. Besides his parents he is predeceased by his brothers John and Mortimer and his sister Dorothy (Murphy) Manley. He is survived by his sister Margaret Mary; sister-in-law Kathleen Murphy, both of Buffalo, New York and ten loving nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 12, at 6:00 PM at St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church, Hartford. The Celebrant will be the Rev. John O'Connor, O.F.M., Minister Provincial of the Franciscan Friars. The Rev. Jerome Massimino, O.F.M. will be Homilist.
