Borodzik Sr., 73, a retired Buffalo firefighter, died Monday in his Buffalo home after a long illness. A graduate of Seneca High School, he joined the Buffalo Fire Department in 1959 and was assigned to Engine 1, Ladder 2 at the Ellicott Street firehouse until his 1988 retirement. Mr. Borodzik received the Commissioner's Citation for Individual Performance and an Honorable Mention Certificate from the Buffalo Fire Board related to a 1968 fire on South Division Street. He also earned an Erie County Emergency Care First Responder Certificate in 1985. He was a member of Local 282, Buffalo Professional Firefighters Association. An amateur athlete, Mr. Borodzik particularly enjoyed playing softball. A catcher, he played for a number recreational league teams, including Top Hill Fishing Club, S.A.C. Softball, Julia's Restaurant, Kogot's and the former Nickel Plate Railroad. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Helen Satlawa Borodzik; six daughters, Christine Smith, Cynthia Kobus, Bonnie Borodzik, Barbara Nelson, Cathy Drdul and Karen Helinski; and a son, Frank Jr., all of Buffalo; a sister, Nancy Marciniak of Lancaster; two brothers, Richard of West Seneca and Michael of Buffalo; and five grandchildren. BRICE - Jessica M. 4/1/2005 Jessica M. Brice, formerly of Clarence and a human resources specialist, died March 22 in Sacramento, Calif. She was 27. Miss Brice was born in Buffalo and raised in Clarence. She graduated from Clarence High School and Genesee Community College. From 1999 to 2002, Miss Brice lived in Orlando, Fla., where she worked at MGM Studios. She moved to Sacramento in 2002 and worked as a human resources specialist at Inalliance, helping developmentally disabled adults find jobs and live independently. Miss Brice enjoyed rock climbing, yoga, shopping, dining out, bicycling, in-line skating, and field hockey. She loved animals, especially her cats Sophie and Phoebe. Survivors include her mother, Margaret A. of Lancaster; her father, Homer of Daytona Beach, Fla.; a sister, Melissa Casolini Dal Bo of the Village of Hamburg; a brother, Daniel of Clarence; and her fiance, David Delisi. A memorial service was held Thursday in Amigone Funeral Home, Clarence. BURSE - William 4/1/2005 William Burse of Buffalo, a retired steelworker, died Monday in Grace Manor Nursing Home after a long illness. He was 70. Born in Lackawanna, he attended Lackawanna schools and later earned his GED. He worked at Bethlehem Steel Corp. on the loading docks and at the coke ovens until the 1980s. Later he worked in construction. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church as a young man and later was a member of Walls Memorial AME Zion Church, where he was a member of the gospel chorus and the men's choir. Surviving are a daughter, Angela Amanda Singletary of Buffalo; two sisters, Patricia and Evelyn Lighten, both of Buffalo; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Thomas T. Edwards Funeral Home, 995 Genesee St. CARROLL - Albert P. 4/1/2005 MILLVILLE - Albert P. Carroll, a foreman for U.S. Gypsum in Oakfield for 32 years, died Thursday in his doctor's office after a brief illness. He was 78. Mr. Carroll was born in the Town of Alabama and lived his entire life in the area, attending local schools. He retired from U.S. Gypsum in 1982. Mr. Carroll was a member of East Shelby Community Bible Church and for nine years was sexton of Millville Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, the former Barbara Hartwick; a son, John A. of Millville; a daughter, Patricia Charache of Millville; a brother, Roger of Oakfield; three sisters, Nancy Casper of Batavia, Cora Odell of Akron and Ruth Lawrence of the Town of Alabama; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in East Shelby Community Bible Church, East Shelby Road, East Shelby. Burial will be in Millville Cemetery. CASEY - Brother Thomas J., Canisius official 4/1/2005 Brother Thomas J. Casey, 83, who held a variety of posts within the Jesuit community at Canisius College, died Wednesday in the New York Province Infirmary in New York City after a long illness. He was 83. The Rochester native graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1941. In 1944, he earned a degree in photography from the Modern Institute of Photography in New York City. Throughout his schooling, he worked as a machinist and production supervisor in the automotive industry. He also ran a photography business for nine years. During World War II, he served as a bombardier and navigator in the Army Air Forces, and was stationed in the European Theater. In 1957, Brother Casey entered the Society of Jesus. He joined the Canisius College Jesuit community in 1965 as associate director of the Jesuit Bureau in Buffalo, a post he held for four years. He served as administrator of St. Joseph's Hall in the Bronx and at St. Peter's Prep in Jersey City, N.J. He oversaw the move of Woodstock College, the Jesuit seminary, from Maryland to Manhattan before returning to Canisius College in 1975 as director of personnel. He served at various times as assistant treasurer and treasurer in the Jesuit community and as manager of the Jesuit summer residence in Port Colborne, Ont. Survivors include two sisters, Sister M. Ambrosine of the Sisters of St. Joseph and Regina Tait, both of Rochester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday in Canisius College's Christ the King Chapel. Burial will be in the Jesuit Cemetery, Auriesville. CERTAIN - Noel A.M. 4/1/2005 Noel Aubrey Miles Certain, 87, a retired contractor, died Tuesday in Mercy Hospital. He had lived in Western New York since 1980, most recently in Hamburg. Mr. Certain retired in 1993 after working as a self-employed private contractor for most of his life. The Sag Harbor native attended Westbury High School and served in the Merchant Marines. Mr. Certain enjoyed motor coach camping and was a member of the Family Motor Coach Association. He also enjoyed chair caning and macrame. He was a member of AME Zion Methodist Church in Westbury and Wesleyan Church of Hamburg. His wife, Audrey O., died in 1988. Survivors include two daughters, Marie Certain Conner of Hempstead and Margo Certain Luniewski of Hamburg; four sons, Noel A.M. II of Huntington, William R. of Hempstead, Ralph P. of Angier, N.C., and Charles C. of Southampton; 17 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at noon Saturday in Wesleyan Church of Hamburg, 4999 McKinley Parkway, Hamburg. GERACE - Francis J., General Electric retiree 4/1/2005 SILVER CREEK - Services for Francis J. Gerace, a General Electric retiree and firefighter, will be held at 11 a.m. today in Hole-Parker Funeral Home, 160 Central Ave. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Mr. Gerace died Sunday in his Silver Creek home after a lengthy illness. He was 68. Born in Angola, Mr. Gerace worked for General Electric in Erie, Pa., for 25 years as an experimental machinist. He retired in 1997. He also worked for Newbrooks Machine Co. in Silver Creek and as a dispatcher for the Silver Creek Police Department. He also was active in the Silver Creek Hook and Ladder Company and Fire Police of the Silver Creek Fire Department. Mr. Gerace was a member of the New York State Fire Chaplains Association, Southwestern Firemen's Association and Western New York Volunteer Firemen's Association. He also served as president of Silver Creek Firemen's Association and Silver Creek Emergency Squad, and governor of Silver Creek Moose Club. Mr. Gerace enjoyed hunting, fishing and computers. He is survived by his wife, the former Layuna "Lee" Smathers; a son, Philip of Brocton; a sister, Josephine Zgoda of Buffalo; a brother, Ciro Jr. of Akron; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. HOWARD - Honcranz 4/1/2005 Honcranz Howard, of Buffalo, a Buffalo City Hall janitor, died Monday in Buffalo General Hospital after a long illness. He was 40. Born in Buffalo, he attended Buffalo Traditional High School before his family moved to Nashville, Tenn. He earned his general equivalency degree and a plumbing certificate from the Job Corps in Cassadaga and worked as a janitor in City Hall until 2002. Surviving are two brothers, James of Nashville and Juan of Buffalo; and three sisters, Cheoril of Nashville, Yvette Hunt of Buffalo and Wanda of Syracuse. A funeral will be held at noon Saturday in Memorial Chapels of Buffalo, 66 E. Utica St., with a wake at 11. HOYT JR. - Robert R. 4/1/2005 Robert R. Hoyt Jr., of Buffalo, a retired truck driver, died Wednesday in Millard Fillmore Hospital after a battle with kidney cancer. He was 60. Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of Orchard Park High School and served in the Army in Germany. Mr. Hoyt was a railroad worker as a young man, then was a truck driver for Weber's food products and Roma Bakery, retiring when Roma closed in 1989. He was affiliated with the Jehovah's Witnesses. Surviving are his wife of 25 years, Christine Ann Kruszka Hoyt; three sons, Robert V. King, John P. of Cheektowaga and Michael R. of Buffalo; a stepson, Gregory T. Lewandowski of Buffalo; three stepdaughters, Renee Ann Wachowski of Buffalo, Valerie M. Hildebrandt of Blasdell and Terese R. Lewandowski of Corfu; his father, Robert R. Sr. of Buffalo; a brother, Donald P. of Lackawanna; and 11 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 351 Emslie St. HRYHOROIC - Paul S. 4/1/2005 Paul S. Hryhoroic, who worked at a McDonald's restaurant in Buffalo for the last 23 years, died Feb. 26 in St. Joseph Hospital, Cheektowaga, after a brief illness. He was 64. He was born in Buffalo and attended Buffalo schools. His wife, Mary, died in 1992. Surviving are two sisters, Theresa Silvestre of Buffalo and Angeline Gomez of Lewiston. A memorial Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday in Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 1947 Bailey Ave. LOUTH - Jonathan D., construction supervisor 4/1/2005 Jonathan D. Louth of Sarasota, Fla., a construction field supervisor who lived most of his life in Western New York, died Easter Sunday in Sarasota as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was 21. Born in Buffalo, Mr. Louth moved to Grand Island when he was 5 and lived there until moving to Florida about a year ago. He was a graduate of Grand Island High School. While here, he worked as a finish carpenter, using his artistic abilities to fashion trim, rails and moldings for area homes. In Florida, he worked as a field supervisor for Eslinger Homes, in charge of the construction of up to 20 homes at the same time. Mr. Louth participated in a number of sports, including archery, baseball, volleyball and golf. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as collecting tools. He is survived by his parents, David E. and Cynthia of Grand Island; two brothers, Jason of Baltimore and Brent of Grand Island; and his grandparents, Ernest and Eileen Louth of the Town of Tonawanda and Raymond and Lois Najuch of Spring Hill, Fla. MAGGIOTTO - Catherine R. 4/1/2005 Catherine R. Maggiotto, 84, an active Catholic laywoman, died Tuesday in her Buffalo home after a long illness. Born Catherine Giovinazzo in Buffalo, she was valedictorian of her graduating class at Grover Cleveland High School. She earned a bachelor's degree in education from Buffalo Teachers College. She was president of the Canisius High School Mothers Guild and also had been active with the parent associations of Bishop Fallon High School, Nardin Academy and Mount St. Joseph Academy. She served on the board of the Diocesan Home School Association. She was a Eucharistic minister and lector at Our Lady of Loretto Catholic Church of Buffalo. Her husband, Louis, died in 1996. Surviving are two daughters, Santa Dominguez of Buffalo and Marie M. Stevens of Snyder; five sons, Louis Jr. and John, both of Hastings-on-Hudson, Anthony of Buffalo, Rocco of New York City and Paul of Concord, N.H.; a brother, Peter of Blasdell; 19 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Burial will be in St. Adalbert's Cemetery, Lancaster. Mrs. Markey, a native of Buffalo, died Saturday in her home in Jonesborough, Tenn., after a long illness. She was 60. Born Joann Even, she was a graduate of Lancaster High School. She moved from the Buffalo area to Bradenton, Fla., in 1968. There, she worked as a clerk for the Manatee County Sheriff's Department and Red Hoagland Pontiac. Mrs. Markey moved from Bradenton to Jonesborough in 2004. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Johnson City, Tenn. She enjoyed gardening, especially roses. She also enjoyed bowling and ceramics. Surviving are her husband of 40 years, Paul R. Markey; a daughter, Tracey Delasalas of Virginia Beach, Va.; her mother, Pearl W. Even of Buffalo; a sister, Rosemary Daniels of Buffalo; and five grandchildren. MCHUGH - Sister Theresa Marie, teacher 4/1/2005 A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Theresa Marie McHugh, a native of Ireland who taught in Diocese of Buffalo Catholic schools from 1934 to 1971, will be offered at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of the Sisters of St. Joseph Residence, 4975 Strickler Road, Clarence. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Mount St. Joseph Section of Forest Lawn. Sister Theresa Marie, who was born Evelyn McHugh in Castlederg, Ireland, died Wednesday in the Sisters of St. Joseph Residence after a long illness. She was 98. She joined the religious order in Buffalo on Aug. 29, 1932, and professed her vows two years later. She earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Mount St. Joseph's Teacher's College. After her long teaching career, she was a member of the office staff at Our Lady of Victory Hospital, in Lackawanna, from 1971 to 1979 and was a participant in the Ministry of Prayer at the order's residence from 1979 until her death. She enjoyed baking, caring for plants and reading. SARDINA - Pasquale V., police detective 4/1/2005 Pasquale V. Sardina, 56, of West Seneca, a retired detective, died Tuesday in Buffalo General Hospital after a long illness. Born in Buffalo, Mr. Sardina joined the Buffalo Police Department in 1968 as a police cadet, working undercover and later becoming a patrolman in what was then Precinct 6. He moved to the Burglary Task Force and became a detective assigned to the intelligence/special services division at Police Headquarters on Franklin Street. He was responsible for the protection of dignitaries. Mr. Sardina retired in 2001 as a detective. For 25 years, he also served in the New York Army National Guard, retiring in 1998 as a master sergeant. Mr. Sardina was a member of the Western Association of Retired Police Officers and the Police Benevolent Association. He had received several honors and awards from the Buffalo Police Department as well as federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, Secret Service, Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the Customs and Immigration services. In addition, Mr. Sardina received state military commendations for his service with the Army National Guard. Survivors include his wife of 13 years, Kathleen Burke of West Seneca; his mother, Vita "Mary" of Cheektowaga; two brothers, Charles Wilson of Williamsville and Francesco of Lancaster; and two sisters, Maria Blackburn of the Town of Tonawanda and Catherine Law of Scio. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. today in St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 2950 Southwestern Blvd., Orchard Park. Burial will be in St. Matthews Cemetery, West Seneca. SMITH - Everett J. 4/1/2005 WESTFIELD - Everett J. Smith, 90, of Fredonia, retired trucking company owner, died Wednesday in Waters of Westfield. The Fredonia native attended Fredonia Central Schools. He had owned and operated numerous trucking companies in the area including Merchants Motor Express, Dan's Motor Lines and most recently, Smith Truck Leasing in Fredonia. He retired in 1981. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Forest Lodge 166, Free and Accepted Masons, and the Jamestown Consistory. He enjoyed camping and fishing trips. His wife of more than 60 years, the former Clara Ann Hirst, died in 1996. Survivors include a son, Daniel C. of Fredonia; two grandsons; and three great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Gardinier-Colletti Memorial Home, 43 W. Fourth St., Dunkirk. Burial will be in Willowbrook Cemetery, Dunkirk. SMITH - Harold D. 4/1/2005 WATERFORD - Harold D. Smith, 85, of Waterford, a native of Buffalo and a National Analine employee for 30 years, died Monday under the care of the Community Hospice of Rensselaer at the Samaritan Hospital in Troy. Mr. Smith graduated from Bennett High School. He was a member and former deacon of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Buffalo and a member of the Cazenovia Golf Course for 53 years. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Vanderwall of Clifton Park and Sandra Smith of Plainsboro, N.J.; a brother, Eugene of Kenmore; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services are private. Burial will be in Forest Lawn. SWEET - Inez R. 4/1/2005 Inez R. Sweet, known as the "Strawberry Lady" to many Lancaster area residents because she sold berries at a busy intersection for many years, died Easter Sunday in Sisters Hospital after an apparent heart attack. She was 76. Born Inez Calkins in Buffalo, she graduated from St. Mary's High School. Mrs. Sweet worked during the spring and early summer at the Catalano Farms strawberry stand at the corner of Broadway and Swartz Road for about 20 years. "She wore strawberry hats, strawberry aprons, strawberry socks," said her daughter, Kathleen Sweet Hartman of Clarence. Mrs. Sweet was a longtime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of St. John and the Lancaster Home Bureau Federation of New York. In addition to her daughter, surviving are her husband of 55 years, A. John; four other daughters, Susan Senecal of Patchin, Patricia Young of Lancaster, Laura Haislip of Riverdale, Md., and Joanne Frysz of Lancaster; a son, John L. of Lancaster; three sisters Valeria Converse, Ottilia Eberle and Elaine Reimer, all of Lancaster; and 13 grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Thursday in St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Lancaster. Burial was in St. Adalbert Cemetery, Lancaster. VITALE - AnnaMae 4/1/2005 NIAGARA FALLS - AnnaMae Vitale of Niagara Falls, a businesswoman in New York City before moving here in 1992, died Wednesday in Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo. She was 68. The former AnnaMae Prevete was born in Brooklyn and was a graduate of Long Island City High School. For several years, she was an Avon representative in New York City. She also worked in Manhattan as executive dining room waitress for Burlington Industries and later as a bookkeeper for Bravor Plumbing in Queens and for Rapp & Collins Advertising in Manhattan. After moving to Niagara Falls with her husband, she worked in the women's jewelry department at Kmart and most recently as a saleswoman for the Mikasa Factory Store in Prime Outlets. She was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church and Post 1142, American Legion Women's Auxiliary. Surviving are her husband, Dominick P. Vitale Sr.; a son, Dominick P. Jr. of Glen Oaks; three daughters, Laura Lasher of Niagara Falls, Frances Leyden of Middle Village and Marie Brom of Rohnert Park, Calif.; two brothers, Salvatore Prevete of Staten Island and Ronald Prevete of Wellington, Fla.; two sisters, Frances McGreer of East Meadow and Marie Harrigan of Boonton, N.J.; and two grandchildren. VOELKER - Mary Ann, retired bookkeeper 3/31/2005 Mary Ann Voelker of Depew, a retired bookkeeper, died Tuesday in Sisters Hospital after a brief illness. She was 65. Born Mary Ann Price in Buffalo, Mrs. Voelker moved to Depew in 1966. She was a graduate of Bishop McMahon High School. After raising her family, she worked as a bookkeeper for about 20 years, first for Sears, Roebuck & Co. and later for Don Davis Pontiac. After retiring in 1995, she was a hospice volunteer and greeter at Sisters Hospital. A longtime member of St. Barnabas Catholic Church, she taught religious education and also was an officer in the Barnabas Athletic Association Women's Auxiliary. Mrs. Voelker liked to golf and sew and enjoyed interior decorating. Her husband, Gerard, died in 2004. Survivors include her fiance, Paul Kopp of South Wales; two daughters, Pamela Ruday of North Tonawanda and Deanna Schettine of Silver Creek; two sons, Jeffrey of Butler, Pa., and Kenneth of Lancaster; a sister, Connie Sutherland of Orchard Park; a brother, Paul Price of Amherst; and 10 grandchildren.
