RAYMOND BUSHROD DEATH, ERIE COUNTY, NEW YORK Copyright(c) 2002 by Margaret Logan-Behrns http://www.usgwarchives.org/copyright.htm ******************************************************** SOURCE: BUFFALO EVENING NEWS -VOL.XXXIV -NO.145 - September 27, 1897 ANOTHER KENTUCKY LYNCHING Kentucky civilization, enlightenment and respect for law manifested themselves again yesterday, when Raymond Bushrod, a negro, was lynched by a mob of 800 people in the courthouse yard of Hawesville, Ky. Not only did the officials make no attempt to prevent the crime, but it is by no means certain that they did not aid in it; for the dispatch telling of the affair says that "the entire population of Hawesville, men, women and children, witnessed the execution." And thus are ideas of "law, order and justice" inculcated in the breasts of the rising generation! The one redeeming feature of the horrible deed is that the blood-thirsty mob were humane enough to give heed to the request of their victim that he be allowed time for prayer. And there, surrounded by the maddened crowd, he knelt down and asked for forgiveness for his crime. _______________ Personal note: Interesting that the other article I sent about this poor man was on the front page - and the above on an inside page. Although it doesn't have an author's name attached to it, nor is there a heading saying 'opinion of the editor', etc, it's lovely to know that at least someone thought this a horrid deed - perhaps this second article will bring a teeny bit of comfort to anyone finding that the gentleman that was lynched was a relative.
