Up to the age of twenty-one years he worked at farming and lumbering in his native place. He then removed to Mill Creek, Erie county, Pa., and there engaged in teaming, which he followed twelve years. He removed to Rockdale [Crawford Co., PA] in 1848 and settled on a farm of sixty acres which he had bought three years before the farm now comprises 150 acres. In 1867 a post- office was established at his place and named Brown Hill, he being appointed postmaster. He served a little over three years and resigned. He followed farming exclusively until 1875, when he built a small store and has since carried it on in connection with his agricultural pursuits. He has been Supervisor of the township, and one of its leading men since he made it his place of residence. He married, April, 1849, Miss Jane R. Barber, daughter of James Barber of the same township [Rockdale].
