Mr. Barwell studied medicine and practiced in England many years. He died in 1875. His younger son, the subject of this sketch, was educated in the common schools and at Airedale Academy, graduating thence at the age of fifteen years. At nineteen he came to the United States, locating in the West. About 1866 he came to Poland, where he has since resided. He is a Republican, a member of Newport Lodge, F. and A.M., and has been a Mason since 1860. May 1, 1872, he married Emily C. Cruikshank, of Deerfield, Oneida county, born October 28, 1852, a daughter of Robert and Elizabeth (Pierce) Cruikshank, who was a direct descendant of Captain Michael Pierce, who came from England to America in 1646, and was slain in battle by the Indians March 26, 1676, new Pawtucket Falls. Mr. Barwell and wife have two chilren, Mary E. Larned and Harry Leicester.
