He is of Mohawk Dutch descent. His grandfather, Henry Broat, settled here in 1798. His father, John Broat, was born at Stone Arabia, March 6, 1795, and participated in the War of 1812. Esquire Hiram Broat owns 248 acres of fine dairy land, on which he keeps fifty cows, and also has a half interest in a cedar swamp in Norway. He has been an important factor in political affairs for many years, having held the position of assessor two years, justice of the peace forty years, supervisor nine years, justice of sessions three years, etc., and is one of the best informed men in Manheim. December 16, 1840, he married Marietta Snell, and has eight children living, three being deceased.
