He received a common school education and after learning the machinest trade, at which he worked for thirty years, traveling to many cities and States in the prosecution of this industry. He afterwards pruchased his farm on the Steuben road of 140 acres of dairy land, upon which he has since lived. He keeps twenty-five or thirty head of stock and cuts from sixty to seventy tons of hay. He married Miss L. Sherman and has a son and a daughter. The family is of New England descent. He was in the ordnance department of government service as inspector during the war.
