He received a common school education in the schools of this vicinity and assisted his father until his seventeenth year. After this he worked at the carpentry trade until 1847, when he became engaged in the lumber traffic until 1879. He then moved to Dolgeville to build the wool factory of Alfred Dolge. Mr. Foster married Hannah, daughter of Peter Getman, and they have two sons and two daughters living, baving lost a son and a daughter. A. S. Foster was himself in his youth a noted dead shot, being able to bring down game with his rifle when on the wing. He has served in Fulton county as highway commissioner and justice of the peace. His ancestors participated in the War of the Revolution and the War of 1812.On his mother's side he is a descendant of the Talcotts.
