His forefathers were prominent in the settlement of Rhode Island, with Roger Williams. The subject has in his possession the first charter given by Charles II to Roger Williams and others. The father of William H. Harris came on foot and alone from Rhode Island to Fairfield in 1780, at the age of sixteen; at the age of thirty-two he married Rebecca Kimball, who bore him two sons and three daughters, as follows: John Harris, died in Newport in 1862, aged forty; Olive, married Lewis Hall, of Newport; Lydia, married E. J. Chassels, of Holland Patent; Sarah who married Rev. G. O. Phelps,of Potsdam; and William H., the subject, who married Miss M. E. Kellar. They have five children living. Mr. Harris owns 175 acres of dairy farm, stocked with thirty-seven cows. He is a Republican.
