He received a good education in the schools of his native town, and has up to the time of his retirement been a successful farmer. He married a sister of Brig. Gen. Spoffard, Emeline Spoffard. Mr. Helmer's grandfather participated in the Revolutionary war, and his father, Leonard Helmer, in the war of 1812. Mr. Helmer sold his farm of 200 acres to Alfred Dolge, who has located the new depot of the Little Falls and Dolgeville railroad thereon. Mr. Helmer still retains the old homestead, which is one of the most picturesque and pleasantly located homes of Dolgeville. They have one adopted daughter.
