His father was John Hughes, a native of Wales, who when a young man came to Oneida county. By his first wife Mr. Hughes had one daughter and two sons. His second wife was Jane Roberts, a native of Wales, by whom he had one son and three daughters. Mr. Hughes was a physician and had an extensive practice. Subject of sketch was reared on a farm and after the death of his father which occurred when subject was six years old, he went to live with his uncle, William G. Roberts, and there resided until twenty years of age. He then farmed in Oneida until 1869, when he came to Russia, where he has since resided on the Hinckley farm. February, 1863, he married Jane Hughes, a native of Remsen, Oneida county, and a daughter of John and Laura Hughes. To E. H. Hughes and wife have been born two children: Laura J. and Gardner, deceased. Mr. Hughes is a Republican.
