He was born in 1835 and came to America in 1846. He learned the trade of tanner in Boston. In 1853 he went into business in Boston, which he gave up during the crisis of 1860. He then went west and took a position in Rockford, Ill. In 1875 he moved to Chicago, becoming superintendent for Ingle Brothers. Subsequently he was superintendent for Gray, Clark & Co. for five years. After filling other responsible positions he became superintendent for J. S. Barnett in 1888, and has done much toward attaining the high name in leather this factory possesses. In 1853 Mr. Meagher married Mary Slattery and they have six children living, two sons and four daughters. Both sons work in the tannery with their father, Thomas F. having charge of the up stairs.
