His father came to this country from Scotland when the subject of this sketch was but a child and settled in Utica. Thomas M. Monroe was one of twelve children. After receiving an excellent education in the public schools of this vicinity, he engaged in the manufacture of cotton in Greene county until the outbreak of the war when he entered the naval service under Dupont at Hilton Head. In 1864 he re-enlisted in the Sixty-First Massachusetts, Company D, and participated in many battles and skirmishes. He was mustered out in June, 1865. Mr.Monroe is an active and prominent member of the G.A.R. and also of the Masonic fraternity. He is engaged in the wholesale bottling traffic, his goods being sold throughout the State. His wife was Miss Amanda J. Lewis of this State. He has two sons, both engaged with him in business.
