He is a son of the late Josiah Rankins, and has always followed agriculture, owning 205 acres of land and fifty cows. His ancestors were here long before the Revolution, in which war his great-great-grandfather, Hugh, a native of Scotland, was a soldier. His great-grandfather, a son of Hugh, was a fifer in the Revolution, and both were in the battle of Lake Champlain. His grandfather, Melchert Rankins, son of Thomas Rankins, was a soldier in the war of 1812, and was stationed at Ogdensburgh and Sackett's Harbor. Mr. Rankins is a Republican, and a leading man in town affairs, is present master of the Grange at Little Falls, and is a Knight Templar in the Masonic fraternity. In 1861 he married Elizabeth Lotridge, daughter of George H. Lotridge, and they have two sons, George H., a fireman on the N.Y.C.R.R., and Josiah, a book-keeper in the Saxony Mills.
