He lived on his father's farm until 1846, when he came to Little Falls and entered the mercantile business. In 1861 he embarked in the cheese business, and in 1868 retired from this to go into the starch manufacturing business with J.J. Gilbert. He continued in this industry for eighteen years. In 1882 he became connected with the Little Falls Knitting Company by purchasing stock, and in 1886 he took the position of secretary and treasurer, which he has since held. The company is very prosperous, and employs 260 hands in the manufacture of underwear. He possesses fine business abilities, and his life has been successful.
