His father was Palmer Root, born 1802 in Russia. His mother was Sallie Truman, born October 26, 1826. Mr. Root was a colonel in the State militia, and was a Whig and afterwards a Republican. He held the offices of supervisor and assessor. His life was spent in Russia, except the last year, when he resided in Norway, where he died in 1863, and his wife in 1885. The subject was reared on a farm and educated in the common schools and in Fairfield Seminary. In 1862 he married Mary Walrath, of Fort Plain, and their children are Nellie E., Minnie, Charles M. and Edith. In 1885 Mrs. Root died, and in 1888 Mr. Root married Mrs. Sarah Hall Slocum. Mr. Root was a resident of Russia until 1863, when he went to Norway and purchased the farm on which he now resides. He is a Prohibitionist and he and wife are Baptists. Mr. Root is a member of Norway Grange, No. 586, and is at present its secretary.
