His grandfather came from Germany and settled in Springfield, Otsego county, where his father was born. They moved to Stark, and thence to Steuben county, where he died about 1850, aged about eighty-eight. Jacob had fourteen children and raised twelve; Jacob, Isaac, Joseph, Peter, Catharine, Betsey, Mary, Laney, Peggy, Nancy, Abram and Moses. Subject was raised on a farm, and has always lived in Stark. At seventeen he learned the carpenter's trade, and followed it seventeen years. He then bought ninety acres, and engaged in farming, making hops a specialty. In 1862 he located where he now lives, on 160 acres about four miles northwest of Starkville. He is an active Republican. He has been married twice, first in January, 1853, to Louisa, daughter of William and Catharine Waltz, by whom he had four children: Adda, who died aged two; William, Minnie, wife of Charles Weeks, and Frank. He married second, Martha, daughter of Abram and Catharine Wagner.
