La Grange, Frankfort, one of fourteen children of Henry I. and Catherine (La Grange) Smith, was born in Schenectady county, where he lived until about sixteen years of age. He was educated in the common schools in Fairfield and at Hungerford Collegiate Institute. For two years he was connected with the "Pittsburgh Daily Post," taught school at Frankfort one year, and read law with Lewis H. Babcock for two years, and with Denison and Everett for the same length of time. In 1875 he began the practice of his profession in Frankfort, where he has since remained. He was married in 1879 to Etta M., a daughter of Col. William Bridenbecker, of Frankfort, she being one of seven children. They have one son, Claude Vernett Smith.
