He received his education in the common schools here and in the Little Falls Academy. After the completion of his studies he taught school for two terms, and in 1857 inaugurated his present jewelry and musical merchandise business, which he has successfully conducted since that period. Mr. Snell's ancestors located upon a tract of land (3,000 acres) granted them by King George, near Little Falls, which is known as Snell's Bush, and upon which five generations have since lived. During the Revolution nine members of the Snell family participated in the battle of Oriskany, seven of whom were slain. Irving Snell's grandfather was in the war of 1812. Mr. Snell married Cloa Richmond, a daughter of Alvan Richmond. They have one daughter, Annie.
