Author: Hardin & Willard

Thomas, J.F., German Flats, was born in Herkimer, June 20, 1836.  He was at 
first a farmer and then in the canal business.  He then began contract work in 
the gun factory and remained there thirty-three years as master mechanic and 
contractor.  He was also contractor for the State of New York for seven years 
and superindendent of section four of the canal.  In 1883 he bought the Ilion 
Opera House, now the Thomas Opera House and has since devoted his attention to 
it and his real estate interests.  He has been president of the village, 
trustee and water commissioner.  In 1856 he married Miss Libby A. McChesney.
