He is a son of Prof. Joshua Thorp, who spent most of his life in teaching. He was for some time principal of the academy at Onondaga Valley, N.Y., and also of the High School at Watertown. He was a very successful teacher and lecturer, and was in the war of the Rebellion. He was a son of Ebenezer Deacon Thorp, one of the pioneer settlers of Root, Montgomery county. John J. Thorp married Ella Young, of German Flats, and they have four children living: Benjamin F., Raymond J., Mabel J.,and Ethel Thorp. Professor Joshua Thorp married Miss Catherine Shull the daughter of Jacob Shull of Danube, Herkimer county, New York. She was the mother of John J. and Louisa A. Thorp.
