His grandfather. James, came from Connecticut, a pioneer of Springfield, Otsego county, and was twice married. His first wife bore him six sons and five daughters. Addison was born in Springfield, and was a farmer and manufacturer. He died in 1867, aged sixty-three, and his wife in January, 1891, aged eighty-four. They raised five children: John J., Anna W., Joseph S., Eugene M. and Benjamin A. The latter was born in Springfield, February 7, 1847. At nineteen he began life for himself by farming on the homestead. At twenty-one he began the manufacture of cheese at Springfield, and a year later came to Van Hornesville. and ran a cheese factory two years. He then spent three years in Illinois in the sewing machine business. In 1875 he bought the cheese factory at Van Hornesville, and in the winter of 1876 came to tbis village and has had charge ever since. The factory was established in 1868. He was also engaged in mercantile business five years. In February, 1892, he was elected town clerk. He married October 14, 1868, Frances A. Drew, daughter of Chauncey P. and Elizabeth (Corbin) Drew, of Springfield, and they have one child, Jessie B. He is a Democrat in politics.
