February 4, 1864, at the early age of seventeen, he enlisted in Company C., Second N.Y. Heavy Artillery, which served as foot soldiers and participated in seventeen battles with the Army of the Potomac. In August, 1864, he was appointed corporal; in October, 1864, sergeatn, and in June, 1865, first sergeant of his company; was honorably discharged after the close of the war, the 29th day of September, 1865. In 1868 Mr. Whiting married Carrie Farrell and they have had six children, three sons and three daughters. Mr. Whiting started his tin, sheet iron and stove, hardware and plumbing business, and by strict attention to business has enlarged it each year.
