LOCATION. This Institution is located on the Rome, Watertown & Ogdensburgh Rail Road, twenty-four miles from Watertown. The Institute building is new, well situated, finished in good style, and provided with all modern improvements. The third story has pleasant and commodious rooms for study and lodging. The Principal resides in the institution; by this arrangement the building is constantly under his supervision. ENGLISH DEPARTMENT. This Department embraces all the preliminary and higher English studies usually taught in the best academies. Competent and thorough teachers are employed, and students are required to master the preliminary studies before leaving them for the pursuit of higher branches. Special pains are taken to illustrate and explain, by diagrams, experiments and lectures, the various subjects of Natural Science, and to interest students in the study of these important, yet too often neglected branches. A new and valuable apparatus has been procured for this purpose, including a magic lantern, a fine electrical machine, (22 inch plate,) the most improved gas-holder and compound blow-pipe, and a powerful galvanic battery. The Institution is already furnished with a small Cabinet of Minerals, with large and beautiful Maps for illustrating local and physical geography, and with Wilson's Series of twenty-two mounted Charts. The Library numbers nearly five hundred volumes, including many valuable works of reference, such as Appleton's Cyclopedia, Barnard's Journal of Education--twenty-two volumes-and forty volumes of standard histories. CLASSICAL DEPARTMENT. A course of study in the Ancient Languages is adopted with particular reference to the wants of students fitting for college, and of young ladies intending to prepare themselves, by a thorough course of training and discipline, for high positions as Educators. The classical student is expected to acquire the ability to apply his mind steadily and closely to a given subject, and for obtaining this most valuable acquisition, nothing can supply the place of hard and patient study. Ample time is allowed at each recitation for drilling classes carefully and critically on the grammatical forms and construction, on the historical, mythological and geographical allusions, and for calling their attention to the rhetorical figures and beauties of the classic authors. Students are required to commit the Grammar thoroughly, to prepare written translations, and to write English compositions on collateral subjects. The Department of Modern Languages embraces the study of French and German. Students in these departments are taught to pronounce correctly and to apply in their daily lessons the important principles and rules of the grammar. ORNAMENTAL DEPARTMENT. Superior advantages are afforded to pupils taking lessons on the Piano. They are required to master the principles of Music, and are taught to execute in the most approved manner. They receive twenty-four lessons of one hour each during the term, and are expected to practice at least two hours a day. A class in vocal music is formed, if pupils desire it. Sixty lessons are given to classes in Drawing, and twenty-four, of two and one-half hours each, to classes in Painting. PRIMARY DEPARTMENT. The teacher in the Primary School devotes her attention chiefly to Object Lessons, Reading, Spelling, Mental Arithmetic and Geography. No effort is spared with the younger classes, that they may commence right and form correct habits in learning the most elementary branches. Wilson's Charts and the blackboard are in constant use. The following courses of study have been adopted: PREPARATORY COURSE. Reading, Writing, Spelling, Geography, Intellectual and Written Arithmetic, English Grammar, Single Entry Book-Keeping. The regulations adopted for the government and discipline of the school, are such as experience has proved necessary, and such as commend themselves to the good sense of all well-disposed students. A copy of these regulations is presented to each new student, with the understanding that he consents to comply with them, if he becomes a member of the school. Students who persist in violating these rules, or who neglect their studies and thus become a hinderance to others, will not be retained as members of the Institution. A record of attendance, conduct and scholarship is kept each day, and forwarded by mail to parents at the close of the term. Students are encouraged to practice self-control, and to conduct themselves in such a way that the report sent to their parents may be good. The use of Intoxicating Liquors is most strictly prohibited. Boarding pupils are required to attend church on Sunday. A short religious meeting is held in the Institution on Tuesday evening. Students are invited to be present. In the Delphic Society connected with the school, young men have the opportunity of practicing extemporaneous debate. The young ladies also have a Literary Society for Intellectual Improvement. The teachers and students meet once in four weeks and spend Friday evening until half past nine in a social entertainment. Students are not expected to attend other parties. EXAMINATIONS. Public examinations occur at the end of each term, and also frequent examinations of classes on Friday afternoons during the session. Parents and all friends of the Institution are cordially and earnestly invited to attend these examinations, and to visit the school as often as possible and witness the methods of teaching.
