He appears in the census records of Jefferson County, New York every decade from 1820 to 1880. Death of Soldier: About 1881 WAR OF 1812 Declaration of Soldier for Pension State of New York, County of Jefferson On this 29th day of September, 1871, personally appeared before me, W. W. Taggart, Surrogate of the County Jefferson, The Surrogate Court, being a Court of Record within and for the county and state aforesaid, Uriel Burlingame, aged 77 years, a resident of Brownville, county of Jefferson, State of New York, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he was married; that his wife's name was Sally Griswold, to whom he was married at Fairfield, NY, in about the year 1817, that he served the full period of sixty days in the Military service of the United States in the war of 1812; that he is the identical Uriel Burlingame who drafted in captain Elijah Carpenter's company, Christopher Bellinger's Regiment N.Y.S.M. at Fairfield, Herkimer Co., NY on or about the 1st day of September 1814 and was honorably discharged at Sackets Harbor, NY on or about the 14th day of November 1814 or thereafter. He served as Musician under said Capt. Carpenters for the defence of Sackets Harbor, NY. That he received 2 Land Warrants for 80 acres each, to which reference is here had for more accurate dates of enlistment & discharge. That he received a written discharge, and the same to his best knowledge & belief is in the Pension Office at Washington, with his papers for obtaining said Warrant. His wife is now deceased That he, at no time during the late rebellion again the authority of the United States, adhered to the cause of the enemies of the Government, giving them aid or comfort; or exercised the functions of any office whatever under any authority, or pretended authority, in hostility to the United States; and that he will support the Constitution of the United States; that he is not in receipt of a pension under any previous act; that he makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States, under the provision of the act approved February 14, 1871, and he hereby constitutes and appoints with full power of substitution and revocation Edgar North of Watertown, NY his true and lawful attorney to prosecute his claim and obtain the pension certificate that may be issued; that his port office is at Watertown, NY, PO Box 753, county of Jefferson, State of New York; that his domicile or place of abode is Brownville, NY. Carpenter's Company, Regiment N.Y.S.M. From Treasury Department April 5, 1872. Respectfully returned to the Commissioner of Pensions with the information that the rolls of Capt. Elijah Carpenter's Company of New York Militia show that Uriel Burlingame served from 20 September 1814, to 14 November 1814. No travel. Total 56 days. (However, also in the records are 2 cards. One shows Uriel Burlingame under Capt. Petre, NY Militia from 1 Sept. 1814 to 20 Sept. 1814. The second card shows him under Capt. E. Carpenter's N.Y. Mil. No enlistment date but a discharge date of Nov. 1814.) Letter from Watertown NY, May 17, 1872 to the Honorable J. Baker, Pension Commissioner. In the claim of Uriel Burlingame (no. lost) for pension under act of Feb. 14, 1872 as a survivor of the war of 1812 the application was sent in over a year ago and he has heard nothing from it since. His service and evidence was the same as that in the case of Isaac Luther and Mr. Luther's pension was granted about nine months ago. Mr. Burlingame is now totally blind and in needy circumstances. Aug. 19, 1872 Brief of Claim For A Survivor's Pension in the case of Uriel Burlingame of Captain Carpenter's Company, New York Militia. Residence Jefferson County, New York. Post office address: P.O.Box 753, Watertown, Jefferson Co. New York. Enlisted 20th Sept. 1814, discharged 14th Nov. 1814. Declaration and identification in due form, filed 2 Oct. 1871 Service for Sixty Days Shown As Follows: Rejected by reason of insufficient service. Report from third auditor states that Uriel Burlingame served in Capt. E. Carpenter's Co. New York Militia From 20 Sept. to 14 Nov. 1814. Length of service 56 days. Rejected August 19th, 1872 Enclosed letter from the acting Commissioner dated Aug. 19th, 1872 Sir: The pension claim of Uriel Burlingame as survivor of the War of 1812 under the act of Feb. 14th, 1871 No. 25217, is rejected by reason of insufficient service. The records shows that Uriel Burlingame served in Captain E. Carpenter's Company, New York Militia from 20th September to 14th November 1814 and no travel allowed. Length of service but 56 days, the law requiring a service of 60 days to give title to pension. Very Respectfully, Jos. The only one that claimant or his agent can find living. That claimant served exactly as Isaac Luther a pensioner under act Feb. 14, 1871. State of New York, County of Jefferson Isaac Luther being duly sworn deposed & says he is a pensioner of the United States by Certificate No. 9216. That I so served under Captain Petre and Captain Elijah Carpenter of the New York State Militia War of 1812. That I so served as a Substitute for Almond Beecher from on or about the 1st day of September 1814 until the 14th day of November 1814 when I was mustered out. That Uriel Burlingame so served with me under said Captain Petre and Captain Elijah Carpenter from the 1st day of September 1814 until the 14th day of November 1814. He so served as a Musician, was a drafted man and was enlisted in and mustered out at the same time as deponent. That said Burlingame when he was drafted he was at Fairfield, Herkimer Co. and had to travel to Sackets Harbor NY, a distance of over 100 miles. That at the time he was mustered out on about the 14 November 1814 he then had to return to Fairfield, Herkimer Co. NY. The distance as aforesaid being over 100 miles. The muster out being at Sackets Harbor, NY. I have no interest whatever in the claim of said Uriel Burlingame for pension. My post office address is Limerick, Jefferson Co. Sir: You are respectfully requested to furnish official evidence of the enrollment, muster, service and duty of Uriel Burlingame, who enlisted on the 1st day of Sept. 1814, in Captain Petre's Company, N.Y. Militia, and who was discharged on the 20th day of Sept., 1814. >From Treasury Department, 3rd Auditors Office Nov. 13th, 1872 Respectfully returned to the Commissioner of Pensions with the information that there are no Rolls of Captain Petre, Company of New York, Militia, War of 1812, on file in the office. Capt. Jos. Petre was a ? officer. War of 1812 Act of March 9, 1878 No. 25217 Submitted by George E. Lemon, Attorney Declaration For Pension Of Soldier of War Of 1812 State of New York County Jefferson On this 22nd day of March, A.D., 1878, personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace, within and for the County and State aforesaid, Uriel Burlingame, aged 83 years, a resident of the town of Brownville, County of Jefferson, State of New York, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he served the full period of four months in the military service of the United States in the war of 1812; that he is the identical Uriel Burlingame who was drafted under the name of Uriel Burlingame at Fairfield, Herkimer County, New York on the 1st day of September, A.D., 1814 as a fifer in Militia-his discharge will show company & regiment & that is suppose to be in Washington or Albany- commanded by Captain Carpenter, Col. Belinger in the war of 1812; that he also has done camp duty being the steward's assistant much of the time. He left Herkimer County to go to Sackets Harbor and a man by the name of Petry had charge of the company; discharged at Sackets Harbor, on the last day of December, 1814; that he was no in battle & acted as fifer when not engaged in other duty as stated . He received Land Warrant 160 acres. He, annulling and revoking all former Powers of Attorney, hereby appoint, with full power of substitution and revocation, George E. Lemon, of Washington D.C. his true and lawful Attorney, to prosecute claim and procure the issuance of a pension certificate; that prior application has been made rejected on account of service being less than 60 days.
