New York October 29 1864 Horace Wood 14th Heavy Artillery admitted to this hospital from Park Barracks March 22nd 1864, died on the 24th of same month, of small pox. Wood - Pension of Horace Wood State of New York County Of Jefferson Catharine B. Wood being duly sworn says she is a resident of Philadelphia in said county, that she has four children living Alonzo Wood who was born January 19th 1847, Elon Wood who was born February 4th 1849, and are over the age of sixteen years.(scratched out and Orville Brayton) the other two for whom she is claiming a pension are under the age of sixteen years and the (?) the ages of the two oldes children thus appeared in her original declaration as over 16 yers of age. Henny Catharine (her x mark) Wood ----- Marriage licence- pension testimony Horace Wood - Catharine Beech 20 July 1844 State Of New York County Of Jefferson John Latimer being duly sworn says that on the 20th day of July A.D. 1844 he as a Justice of the Peace united in marriage Horace Wood lately deceased to Catharine Beach - that the following is a true and correct copy of the record of said marriage and the whole of such original (unreadable) Married on the 20th of July 1844 at the house of Mark Anthony in Antwerp. Mr. Horace Wood of Philadelphia to Miss Catharine Beach of Antwerp (unreadable) and says that there is no other record of said marriage that the (unreadable) within his knowledge. Latimer ----- Declaration for Minor children in order to obtain army pension 19 February 1872 Declaration for Minor Children in order to obtain Army Pension Act July 14,1862 State Of New York County Of Jefferson On this Nineteenth day of February A.D.1872, personally appeared before the Special County Judge of the County Of Jefferson, Catherine Mc. Bride, a resident of Champion in the County of Jefferson and State Of New York, aged fourty fouryears, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on oath make the following declaration, as guardian of said minor child of Horace Wood deceased, in order to obtain the benefits of the provisions made by the act of Congress approved July 14, 1852, granting pensions to minor children, under sixteen years of age, of deceased officers and soldiers ; that she is the guardian of Emma A. Wood whose father was a Private in company "I" commanded by ----- in the 14'" regiment of N.Y.H.A. in the war of 1861, and that the said Horace Wood died at Blackwell Island on the 24th day of march 1n the year 1864 that the mother of the child aforesaid was remarried to Joel McBride on the 22nd day of November in the year 1871, and the date of birth was as follows: Born August 4' 1861, That I am the mother of said Emma A. Wood. She further declares that the parents of her said ward were married at Antwerp Jefferson County State Of New York, on the 11th day of July 1845 by John Lattimer Esq. Justice Of The Peace. She hereby appoints Bradly Winslow of Watertown New York with full power of substitution, her Atterney to prosecute her claim and to recieve her pension certificate when issued. Artillery that she was present immediately after the birth of their child Emma A. Wood and that she was born August 5th 1861 and that she distinctly remember the fact and she has known the child ever since and she has no interest in the claim of Catharine Wood for a pension and is in no way related to her. A. Savage Justice of the Peace ----- Testimony of Franklin W. Call of Midland Michigan for Horace Wood State Of New York County Of Jefferson Franklin W. Call being duly sworn that he is a resident of Midland Michigan that he was a lieutenant in 14th regiment of New York H Artillery and that he was acquainted with Horace Wood late a private of said company in said regiment that saw Horace Wood while in the service of the United States and in the line of his duty while at Park Barracks New York City during (unreadable) guard duty was attacked with Small Pox this about March 9th 1863 that he was subsequently saw him from there to the Hospital on Blackwell Island N.Y. where he died about march 25th 1863 (unreadable ) was at the time detailed with said detachment to do guard duty being a 1st Sergeant and was subsequently promoted to a lieutenancy in said regiment and knew said facts from a formal acquaintance with said Horace Wood and from having recieved the order announcing his death and transmitted it to the company and distinctly remember the June. Co. ----- Testimony Of Nancy Wring 25 May 1864 State of New York County Of Jefferson Nancy Wring being duly sworn depons and says that she was well acquainted with Horace Wood in his life time that he left him surviving four minor children Alonzo - Elon - Brayton and Adella (should be Orville Brayton and Emma Adell) the youngest Adella is about 3 years of age, and the oldest Alonzo is about eighteen - (signed) Mrs Nancy Wring Sworn and Subscribed befor me this 25th day of May 1864 (signed) John S. H. Artillery and was present at the birth of their child Emma A. Wood and that said child was born August 5th 1861 and there was no physician present or other person present at the birth of said child except Horace Wood her husband. And affiant distinctly remember the fact and has known the child ever since its birth and has lived neighbor ever since then. A. Savage Justice of the Peace ----- Testimony of Thomas F.Kearns Jefferson County NY 28 March 1872 Thomas F. Kearns being duly sworn says that for 15 years next preceeding A.D. 1871 he resided in the town of Philadelphia said county; that he knew and was well aquainted with Horace Wood, deceased, also priv t Co "I" 14th N.Y. H. artillery in the war of the Rebellion, and was and is also aquainted with the family of said Wood. Deponent further says that he knows the fact to be that said Horace Wood left no minor child or children surviving of any marriage, except Emma A. Wood. My post office address is Watertown Jefferson County New York, and I have no interest in the claim of Catharine Mc. Bride guardian of Emma A. Wood for a pension. March 10th 1866 Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the reciept from your Office of application for pension No. 53,095, and to return it herwith, with such information as is furnished by the files of this Office. It appears from the Rolls on file in this office, that Horace Wood was enrolled on the 8th day of Dec. 1863, at Philadelphia N.Y. in Co. "I" 14th Regiment of N.Y.H. Art Volunteers, to serve 3 years or during the war, amd mustered into service as a Pvte on the 21st day of Dec 1863 at Rochester N.Y. in Co. "I" 14th Regiment of N.Y.H. Art. Voluntees to serve 3 years or during the war. On the Muster Out Roll of Co. "I" of taht regiment, dated August 26th 1865, he is reported "Died New York" Hosp Mch 20/64 disease" .
