"The Commanding Officer of the Third Regiment of Infantry. To all who shall see these presents greeting: Know Ye, That reposing special trust and confidence in the patriotism, valor, fidelity and abilities of DAVID R. MARTIN, I do hereby appoint him Corporal, in Company "C" of the Third Regiment of Infantry in the service of the UNITED STATES, to rank as such from the 19th day of January one thousand nine hundred and fourteen..." Additional Comments: See Knox County, Kentucky files for photograph of document: David Rad Martin was born on December 15, 1893 in Gray, Knox County, Kentucky enlisted on March 6, 1912 and was honorably discharged on March 7, 1915 as a corporal of refered unit at Madison Barracks, Jefferson County, New York. David Rad Martin was my grandfather. David's father was John Dalton Martin and his mother was Lucy Frances Johnson. On December 24, 1915, David Rad Martin married Nannie Walters in his father John Martin's home Harris Road (Arapaho Trail), Gray, Knox County, Kentucky. With Nannie Walters (Martin), David fathered Vernon Eugene Martin & Theodore Rossevelt Martin. David Rad Martin perished on October 22, 1918 from the Spanish Influenza and was buried on his father John Dalton Martin's farm. Though he was the first, the burial site was demarked for future Martin Family burials and is now known as the John Dalton Martin Memorial Cemetery.
