He was one of 7 known (by this writer) children . He was born in what today is known as Fitchburg, Mass. In or about the year 1773, the Witt family moved to Walpole, New Hampshire. Three years later, at the age of 16, Moses enlisted as a volunteer in support of the Revolution with the New Hampshire Volunteers. He was sent to Lake Champlain and worked on constructing reinforcements at Mt. Independence. Due to illness Moses was discharged in October 1776 and his brothers came for him and carried him home. Then, in June 1777 he was drafted for 30 days and was sent back to Mt. Independence, VT, where he served for another 30 days. His regiment was under General St. Clair's command that saw action at Otter Creek. He was again discharged in July 1777. In later years he was turned down for Military pension as he hadn't served long enough to be granted same. Moses was married twice. His first wife was Bethiah Nicols, the daughter of Samuel and Deborah Stewart (nee) Nichols. They were married probably in the year 1778 most likely in New Hampshire, as they buried a daughter there. They moved to Hinsdale, NH, and then in 1791 they moved to the town of (what is now known as) Salisbury, Herkimer Co., New York. It was here that he purchased 100 acres of land and became one of the first settlers in this part of New York. The deed purchasing the property indicates that he was still going by the Family Name, Witt. It was most likely here that Bethiah passed away probably in the year 1813. Children of Moses and Bethiah were: Luther, bapt. 1779; Bethiah, b. 1782; Moses, Jr. b. 1795; Caroline, b. 1801; and Theresa. In 1817 Moses remarried. This time to a women whose first name was Lavina. It is yet to be determined what her maiden or previously married name was. It has never been confirmed if Moses and Lavina ever had any children. This writer suspects not. Moses and Lavinia sold their property at Salisbury, NY in 1834 and moved to Lowville, Lewis Co., NY. It was recorded in this property deed that Moses was now going by the last name of deWitt or De Witt. At that time, they also transferred to the Lowville Presbyterian Church. Lavina died on 14 June 1850 at Lowville, NY and is buried in the Stowe Square Cemetery at Lowville. After Lavina's death, Moses went to live with relatives at Denmark, NY and is listed on the 1850 census in the home of Samuel Warn, possibly a Step-son or Step-grandson. Moses died 15 December 1850 and is also buried at the Stowe Square Cemetery in Lowville. As the crow flies, Moses and Lavina are buried about 1.5 Miles south and east of the 100 acres that they purchased in 1834 which too overlooked the Black river valley that their graves still overlook today. Moses De Witt Sr. is my Great/Great/Great Grandfather. mld File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ny/lewis/photos/tombstones/stowesquare/dewittsr7742gph.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/nyfiles/ File size: 3.7 Kb
