Martin Murphy a resident of Brookfield in said county of Madison & State of New York [aged] seventy seven years of age and upwards who being first duly sworn according to law doth as his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of congress passed June 7th 1832. That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as hereinafter stated. Firstly That in April 1775 then being a resident of South Kingston state of Rhode Island he enlisted at Newport for nine months in the company of Captain Christopher Gerelin in Colonel Varnums1 Regiment in the Rhode Island State troops. That the company & declarant rendezvoused at a place called Little Rest Hill in said South Kingston and marched from there through North through North Kingston and other towns on the route to Providence and from there to Roxbury in Massachusetts & from there thro [Carthage] to a place called [Plo**** Hill] within gun shot of Bunker Hill when declarant spends out his time of nine months and was verbally discharged about the middle of January 1776. That he was in sight of Bunker Hill Battle at the time it took place but the two Rhode Island Regiments did not reach the field in time to take part in the battle but arrived just as the American troops were leaving the fields- declarant knew them as officers Generals Greene, Putnam, Lee & Washington & was detailed to serve as General Lees life guard & did so serve about five months. Secondly That in June 1776 he was drafted at South Kingston for one month in Captain Samuel Potters Company in Col Dyers Regiment to guard the shores of Rhode Island. That he served out the month at Taverton and then volunteered in the same line for two months longer and served it out in the same company & regiment- Thirdly That soon after his return here from that above [**** **** **** *****] & which declarant believes when again in September 1776 he went into the line [*******] under Captain Potter as a volunteer in duties & [*****] for a year from time to time taking the places as a substitute for different persons any when ever Tuft ? Castle of South Kingston Gileum Rush? of the same place & William Nemery? of the same place- that the duty was to guard the shores of Rhode Island and lay? sometimes at Point Judith & sometimes at the South Ferry [******* *******] at C T. [********] Gardiners farm that during this time declarant [********] in taking & leaving the persons on board the British Frigete [or Fryite] Liner of 36 guns that run for the [**acht?] Fourthly That in August 1778 he again volunteered at South Kingston & rendezvoused at Little Rest Hill- Captain Potters Company of Rhode Island Militia to his [***** ******* *******] & served about 40 days- even in one of the [********* ****] with the enemy on that occasion Fifthly That in 1779 he served both under Tift & as a volunteer nearly the whole year in Potters Company guarding the coast of Rhode Island and the mainlands- Netherlands Sixthly That he served in the same manner through 1780 at the same places above & taken [****] at a place called "Backside"? under Captain Daniel Tift Seventhly That he served in the same manner through the yrs 1781 & 1782 under Capt. Tift& until the declaration of peece over malle ?. That applicant was always honorably discharged but has no paper discharge or document to prove his serving That he occasionally served as a sergent in said corps. Declarant removed from South Kingston in Rhode Island to Granville in Massachusetts [****** ****** ****** ******] & in 1805 removed to Brookfield Madison County New York where he here resides [in line/and lives] & still resides Declarant as he has [lived/been] [confined] & [*********] was born January 11- 1755 at Newport Rhode Island That he has a recall of his age in the family Bible stating the above time of his birth That although he acted as sergant both under Captains Potter & Tift he never under any written or printed warrant & it was not the practice to do so That he has above stated where he lived when called into service & the manner in which he was called into it together with the general circumstances of that service so far as he can now recall That he hopes to be able to show by Samuel M. Coon and Daniel Coon of Brookfield affirm his proven character for veracity & then belief of his service as a soldier of the New Nation That he knows of no person whose testimony he can procure to testify to his service except those whose affidavits are herewith forwarded. He hereby relinquishes every claim what ever to a pension except the present & declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state. Martin Murphy
