    Gerundegut or Irondequoit, is undoubtedly a corruption of the Seneca name as
given by Denonville-Ganiagatarontagouat. The correct Seneca spelling of the name
is O-nyiu-da-on-da-gwat, meaning a bay or cove: literally a turning out or going
aside of the lake; compound of Ga-nyiu-dach (lake), and O-dagwah (it turns out)
according to Marshall.
