Birch Dies, Longtime Pittsfordite Thomas E. Birch, D.D.S., a longtime resident of Pittsford, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 1985, following a lengthy illness. Dr. Birch was born in Elyria, Ohio, in May, 1929. He moved to Rochester, where he attended school in Brighton and graduated from Brighton High School in 1947. He then attended Colgate University, where he graduated in 1951 and was a member of Phi Delta Theta. From there, Dr. Birch attended dental school at the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 1955. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania Dr. Birch was an officer in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in France for two years. Upon his return to the States, Dr. Birch set up and maintained his dental practice for 25 years on Mt. Hope Avenue. Dr. Birch was very active in the Lions Club Youth Ice hockey and continued his enthusiastic interests with Pittsford Sutherland High School hockey. He was a loyal fan of the school's sports teams, including football, girls' swim team and ice hockey. Dr. Birch's favorite hobbies were fishing, duck hunting, and model-ship building. Dr. Birch lived for the arrival of Spring when once again he could head for the open waters and drop in his fishing line. He was a member of the Montezuma Game Farms, Inc. and Ducks Unlimited. Dr. Birch is survived by his wife, Joan; son Thomas of Harwich, Mass.; daughter, Barbara, of Worcester, Mass.; his parents, Claude and Mildred Birch, of Belleau Bluffs, Fla.; his sister, Doris Russell, of Oregon; brother, David Cragg, of Fla.; mother-in-law, Mrs. Herbert W. Gaskell; and several nieces and nephews. Dr. Birch was also the son of the late Minnie N. Birch. Memorial services were held Wednesday, Feb. 6, at the Anthony Funeral Home. The family has requested that any donations be made to the Pittsford Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Or the American Heart Association.
